Why We Love This Hotel

  • This "gorgeous boutique hideaway" (The Daily Telegraph) is within easy reach of the Cotswolds and historic Bath
  • The property dates back to the 18th century and is set in 11 acres of grounds
  • There's a brasserie restaurant, an indoor pool and a gin bar with over 50 spirits
  • We've also negotiated an afternoon tea for two with gin and tonic or prosecco for £29

Described by The AA as a "quiet retreat", Widbrook Grange offers "hip farmhouse" accommodation (The Daily Telegraph) in the Wiltshire countryside.

This boutique hotel is situated off a country lane just outside Bradford on Avon, a "picturesque" (VisitEngland) riverside town on the edge of the Cotswolds. It occupies an 18th-century former farmhouse and its converted stables and barns, and is set in 11 acres of wildlife-rich grounds.

The National Trust's 15th-century Westwood Manor is a 5-minute drive (or 30-minute walk) away, while both Longleat Safari Park and the ancient city of Bath -- known for its Roman ruins and elegant Georgian architecture -- are less than 25 minutes' drive from the hotel. Stonehenge, the UK's most famous prehistoric monument, is about 40 minutes away by car.

The Daily Telegraph praises the "relaxed atmosphere", as well as the décor of the public areas, which have "flagstone floors, leather armchairs and open fires, with witty examples of re-purposed farmyard equipment dotted about". In the brasserie, award-winning head chef Sandor Szucs (he won the Hungarian version of "MasterChef") serves up traditional farmhouse cooking with a gastro twist, focusing on "seasonal local produce" (The AA).

There's also a gin bar with a selection of over 50 spirits, as well as an indoor pool, a gym and an on-site jogging trail. The sister pub across the road overlooks Bradford on Avon marina and has gardens and a kids' play area.

Rooms are "spacious" (The AA), have "sumptuous" beds (The Daily Telegraph) and are decorated in a playful rustic-chic style. Super Deluxe Rooms are bigger than Classic Rooms and feature wood-beamed ceilings, in-room roll-top baths and 4-poster beds. Wi-Fi is free.

There was not enough hot water in the evening for shower or bath, so we waited until the next morning to have one.

The bedroom was beautifully clean, airy and cosy and the bed was very comfortable indeed. The staff were friendly and helpful and the gins were splendid! The breakfasts were good. Delicious home made yoghurt in particular.
Other Comments
The evening meal was a disappointment, two items supposedly on the menu , not included or replaced with other items, no vegetables apart from a few spinach leaves and the desserts were poor in the extreme. A small blob of ice cream a tiny spoonful of chocolate mousse and a tiny square of chocolate cake which altogether made for an expensive and below par meal.
