The 18th-century Lion Hotel Criccieth is on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 5-minute walk from the Blue Flag-awarded Criccieth Beach and 15 minutes' drive from Snowdonia National Park -- you can clearly see the mountains and the sea from the hotel.

According to Lonely Planet, Criccieth's "main claim to fame is ruined Criccieth Castle", which is "perched up on the clifftop" and has "views stretching along the peninsula's southern coast and across Tremadog Bay to Harlech". The castle, which dates back to the 1230s, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula" due to its location; the harbour town of Porthmadog is a 10-minute drive away and marks the start of the 91-mile Llŷn Coastal Path, which runs around the peninsula to Caernarfon. Portmeirion, made famous in the TV series "The Prisoner", is 20 minutes away. The Italianate village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, whose aunt, Miss Hilda Greaves, once owned the villa.

The hotel's Llewellyn Restaurant was renovated in 2017 and serves British cuisine made using local produce. The restaurant has limited opening times in winter, but food is always available at the bar. Wi-Fi is free.

There will be scaffolding on the hotel from 1-31 January while the windows are replaced.

A pity that the restaurant was close as our meal in the bar left a little to be desired compared with other nearby establishments for a similar cost

For the price we paid this was very good value and the bar food in the evening was very good. However it was very dated in its decor and the restaurant space had no atmosphere at all. Everywhere was clean and tidy but really dull. Also we were worried when we found complimentary earplugs - and they were needed as there was obviously no noise proofing between rooms or room and corridors. So there was a lot of ambient noise. Luckily it wasn't busy so noise from other guests was not so bad. So sadly we won't be returning.
