The Best Western Passage House Hotel, near the towns of Kingsteignton and Newton Abbot, offers "memorable views of the Teign Estuary", says The AA, and is close to both the English Riviera and Dartmoor National Park.
Torquay, Babbacombe Model Village and Paignton are all 15-20 minutes' drive away. Family-friendly Paignton Zoo Environmental Park boasts 2000 creatures, six animal habitats and even a jungle express train. History buffs will enjoy Torre Abbey in Torquay, a museum of history and art housed in an 18th-century building that's part of a monastery complex dating from 1196.
Hackney Marshes Local Nature Reserve is less than 15 minutes' walk away. Buzzards, kestrels and pheasants are often seen around the marshes and there are a variety of cycling and walking routes.
Dartmoor National Park is 15 minutes' drive from the hotel and Haytor Rocks, which offers excellent views of the Teign Estuary and is one of Dartmoor's most picturesque spots, is 20 minutes' drive away. Exmouth at the western end of the Jurassic Coast is 35 minutes' drive away.
Berry Pomeroy Castle, a Tudor mansion within the walls of an earlier castle, is 20 minutes away, while Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves, an intricate cave system, is a 25-minute journey by car.

Excellent deal from Travelzoo with dinner included. Travelzoo customers are located in the lodges and not in main hotel, treated a bit 2nd rate. North lodge is noisy from main road. We were moved to south lodge on request.

Nice hotel and we were warmly greeted. We stayed in the south lodge which is separated from the main hotel. It’s fairly basic but clean and tidy. The hotel restaurant was good but not much choice. There is a pub/restaurant on site which had a slightly better choice of food. We would definitely visit again. The hotel is in a great location for visiting south Devon.

Upgraded to 'deluxe' room at extra £40 / night. Booked two nights, left after one... Bathroom sinks did not drain. Had to stuff napkin to cover sensor in bathroom to stop lights coming on throughout the night. Dining experience miserable, they could consider some soft music, food really disappointing - watery gravy, over cooked, tasteless vegetables. Overrated.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Passage House with our friends. We would definitely stay there again in the future and are interested to hear of any future offers. The staff were lovely, food very good and the position of the hotel wonderful. When we arrived we were a bit taken aback because the hotel doesn't look very enticing from the front but that in no way reflects the inside of the hotel and the Christmas decorations were beautiful.

Staff wonderful, from reception to Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Service. Once we upgraded to a hotel bedroom rather than the two annexe buildings the break became more as we had hoped for / anticipated. The leisure centre was petite and unfortunately the pool, sauna and Jacuzzi were all on the chilly side so didn't encourage the extended use we had envisaged. Would return but only to stay in the hotel and in the summer when long walks would be more pleasant and safer! Very poor lighting around and away from the hotel.
Other Comments
The travel zoo offer cold have been more detailed and explained the upgrades in detail. Location is only a short walk away from Kingsteignton but with no lighting nor foot paths leading away from the hotel it is not a winter option. Overall disappointed with the package but not the break!

Very enjoyable experience on the whole and was good value. Hotel in a great location. Rooms in Lodge a bit tired and worn and quite basic but had everything we needed. I know the hotels make clear the rooms available for Travel Zoo deals are 'Standard Rooms' but I feel this is not always the case and it is the poorer quality Standard rooms offered for the deals. It would be good if this was made clear also that the rooms would not be in the main building or have other limitations. The De Vere Hotel in Greenwich, the travel zoo rooms were on the 4th floor with small dormers and the bed positioned so if you forgot to duck you hit your head. I don't think all the rooms on the other 3 floors are not at least some of them 'Standard rooms'. It would just be good to make an informed decision on booking what is actually on offer with a deal, to avoid disappointment. For example something like, please note rooms available on this deal are not located in the main hotel building and there is no covered walkway, or rooms on this deal located on the 4th floor.
Other Comments
Hotel main building, bar and restaurant very nice with lovely views. Food was great and service quite good. Was on a Travel Zoo deal so was great Value for Money. Travel Zoo deal rooms not in the main building but in the South Lodge so had to walk between buildings, not too far and OK as weather dry and, despite being in November, was not too cold but could be something to know beforehand and note for winter bookings. Also rooms in the lodge are OK, you have everything you need but basic and a bit tired and worn. basic Personally, the room not being where you eat and drink is a pet hate of mine but the deal was such good value and the hotel in such a good location, we would go again. We had lovely days out in Teignmouth, Torquay and Dartmouth.

The building and decor are practical and functional rather than being a quaint, cosy place to be, more business trip and meetings than romantic getaway. We had no real desire to hang around and enjoy the hotel. It may have been different in summer when access to the outside areas and the estuary view would have been possible.
We had an evening meal and two breakfasts and the food was very good, reasonably priced and all the resturant staff excellent and attentive.
The biggest let down was our room. Dull and functional with no redeeming features other than a comfortable bed. Badly decorated and badly cleaned. The bathroom in particular was shoddy and tired with many mouldy patches on the floor tiles and ceiling.
A perfectly pleasant functional hotel, nicely situated on with views of the estuary very much let down by the standard of decor in the rooms and poor housekeeping.

I’ve marked down the room as it was a bit tired. As it was a deluxe room it could have done with a freshen up decor wise. Also little things like a loose toilet seat, extractor fan not working in the bathroom and damaged shower screen seal should probably have been noticed and repaired.

When we checked into the hotel, we were originally given a really disappointing room, which was in a separate annexe, away from the main hotel building, restaurant and leisure complex. I asked Reception if we could move rooms, but they could only offer us a Family or a Superior Room, both of which required a additional charge, which was a shame (we did decide to opt for the family room in main hotel building, which was an extra £10 per night). This room was a lot bigger but rather tatty in some areas, with paint peeling off and scuff marks on walls etc. (the shower curtain was also mouldy at the bottom!). We did have our meal in the restaurant on the first night (inc in the deal) - food was good, but service was incredibly slow and also very amateur, unfortunately. Breakfast was Ok, but good was not of a high quality. Pool/gym facilities were of a fairly good standard, but jazucci was rather cold.

We spent 3 nights at this hotel for our anniversary. We requested the dinner on the second night rather than the first as we could not say what time we would arrive. This was not a problem for the receptionist to rearrange as I had 'phoned ahead and requested the change. The meal was delicious. We had to wait a little while for our table to be ready, but it was worth it as we were seated in the conservatory, candles on our table and a view over the river.
Other Comments
The reception staff and the staff in the restaurant were always very helpful. Even though the hotel is beside a dual carriageway, we could hear no sound from it in the room. The location beside the river is beautiful.
Our room was in the North Lodge, just a short distance from the main hotel building. On the Saturday night there was an function in the hotel - we could not hear any of the noise in our room.

The second breakfast they bought was hotter but had no bacon on the plate! It took over 20 mins for them to take our order for tea/coffee and cooked breakfast first day. Our evening meal was very average, just about warm, starter choices weren’t available at 8pm which seemed odd. There was no chat or banter with the waiting staff ... lacked any atmosphere or direction from senior management. The young staff looked confused and didn’t really know how to deal with the complaints.
We did have to move rooms as the tv didn’t work but at least the room was clean and comfortable and the hotel was in a beautiful location by the river so we enjoyed our stay despite these problems.

They didn't have sufficient staff to cope with the obvious success of this offer. Service at dinner on the first night was painfully slow and when the food eventually arrived, the chicken breast was cremated and the chef had somehow contrived to do cauliflower three ways. We would normally have refused to pay for it, but we had paid in advance.
At breakfast, a number of tables had recently been vacated, but we had to sit at a dirty table and wait for it to be made up for us. To avoid waste, we asked for one rasher of bacon each, the breakfasts came before the tea and coffee arrived and there were three aged and leather-like rashers on each plate. The toast was made up from left-overs and was cold and soft when it arrived. We didn't go down to breakfast the following morning. To add insult to injury, the double bed in our room was out of alignment and Mrs Hicks stubbed her toe badly on the base. This was mentioned at reception the following morning, when we asked for it to be put right, but on going back to the made-up room, this hadn't been done. Three days later her toes are black and blue and very painful.

The Hotel was nicely situated but was somewhat out of date inside. Rooms were generously proportioned but we had to pay for an upgrade to be able to see the estuary otherwise we would have been looking out over the car park. The bathroom, although it had all you needed was in desperate need of a makeover and still had a plastic loo seat and shower curtains! The public areas were all in a reasonable state but they too would have benefited from a makeover. The staff were all friendly but anything that involved food seemed to be sadly lacking. Not just us but other people too, Seemed to be continually asking for things such as a spoon for soup, not being offered tea or coffee or toast at breakfast, orders being lost or muddled. It was a pleasant stay but all these negatives would prevent us from going here again.

We booked a standard room unbeknown to us that it was in a separate building to the main facilities. We arrived tired and it was raining so the last thing we wanted to do was move the car and get wet. We were told that the standard rooms in the main building were family rooms and they offered us an upgraded river view room for a fee. Glad we did.

A good break and excellent value. However the hotel is let down by restaurant, staff did not empty tables, food was very slow being served and it was haphazard as to when you got courses. Main course was ok a bit uninspiring, dessert was inedible.

We waited over 2 hours to receive our evening meal. There was a huge group taking dinner and this no doubt accounted for the delay. On the other hand this should have been factored in with a view to the level of required staff. During our wait , we discovered the heating was not turned on and there was no way to turn on the electric wall radiator.

The Wait-at-Table Staff are RUSHING around, covering great distances. They do this with grace and courtesy, whilst fielding grumbles about how long it is taking to BE served! Whilst
this IS frustrating to a customer, when the food arrives it is of exceptional quality, to be thoroughly enjoyed. Staff in the kitchen who are cooking deserve 100 percent praise. Roller skates for Service Staff? Or, better...
Consider employing more At-Table staff. We did wait, but I am not griping. Food was just SO good!
I was, however, deeply disheartened that BOTH fish options for breakfast had run out before half time on the first day Breakfast service. This left but the one choice ... a cholesterol heavy one!

Originally offered a room in the North Lodge but was very basic and dark with a very hard bed so upgraded to an estuary room in the main hotel for £20 a night extra, which was well worth it for the views alone. Shared the camembert and had the haunch of venison, both very good followed by the pear tart. Tasty breakfast. Pool disappointing as it was quite small. The Passage House Inn round the corner was a good place for dinner the second night.

Where rooms are offered that are not actually part of the hotel, eg North Lodge, this should be made clear. We were fortunate to change rooms but walking across to the main hotel could have been difficult for us.

Dinner availability was late on first night and the hotel refused to move our dinner option to the second night. Room allocated was in the lodge next to the A381 dual carriageway. Soap dispenser fell off the wall!. Shower rail in the bath was replaced by a hook to hold the shower head but this was too high. The waste bin in the bathroom was not emptied on the morning ready for the next day.
When I requested a change of room on the second day the hotel wanted to charge me £20.00 for a room which was no different to the old room although the new bathroom had mould on the ceiling!

Our deal included a £30 allowance each on the 1st night in the restaurant. Both of our starters were good and so was dessert and cheese and biscuits, but main course was very disappointing, had catch of the day (sea bass), but it was like it had been put on the plate earlier in the evening and just warmed up in the oven! The waiting staff were polite but they needed a restaurant manager to take charge. We ordered a bottle of red wine, it was put on our table with the statement 'here it is'. It had not been opened and therefore not poured for us to taste

The receptionists were very helpful but the waiters in the restaurant did not seem very well trained. They were pleasant but not very knowledgeable about the menu - not clued up about gluten free nor selection of sorbets.
It was great to be able to use the computer and print off a walk for free. However I think a booklet about local walks including the South West Coastal Path would be a useful addition in the foyer or hotel information book in the bedroom. Shower was very nice but the towels were enormous and were changed unnecessarily. We would have been very happy to have used the same towels over our 2 night stay.

our room we found noisy from the road traffic, (assumed faulty double glazing) , receptionist offered upgrade at £40 which defeats the object of a bargain break, we asked to see the manager he promptly told us nobody else had complained which made us feel unwelcome he said there were no more rooms in the hotel , and offered us one outside in what they call the lodges. we accepted it as it was quieter . also it was closer to the road.so our point is that there must have been something wrong with the glazing in the original room. We have been to many hotels and we are not the complaining type.

Had to go to another building for reception/restaurant - fine in good weather but we got soaked on the first night. Rooms very bland and almost cell like. Bathroom ok but shower was inadequate and very difficult to turn off. Staff unwelcoming, almost surly. Dinner on first night had a limit of £30 per head (we weren't told about this until we read the menu). Very pricey so didn't run to 3 courses and coffee so didn't have dessert only to be told when we came to leave that we would have to pay for the coffee as it wasn't included in the meal! They relented - eventually. Food was fair only - one of our meals arrived incomplete so had to be sent back, the second was advertised on the menu as a pork chop etc but turned out to be a pork steak - a much smaller and cheaper cut of meat.
Breakfast was reasonable but, on each morning, our breakfasts were paraded around the dining room for a while by the waiter before he found who they belonged to. A little bit of organisation would go a long way!

The hotel is next door to a pub. The drink and food prices are not competitive and the menu is not as varied.

Basin , hairdryer needed fixing. Sheet didn’t fit bed. No bedside lights, very stark room. Food very poor selection and quality. Swimming pool opened at 8 am but no attendant in duty until 9 am, safety? . Their idea of cleaning breakfast table was to sweep their hand across it filling the chairs with crumbs.

Seeing the Flying Scotsman pass under the railway bridge next to the hotel! I congratulate the most excellent staff in the restaurant. A big well done.

Need to sort the towel rails. Tried the switch at the back of the rail in up and down positions to no effect. No staff found (cleaning or reception) who could assist. If anyone can switch it on please leave information in the room information pack how to do so.

The situation of the hotel is superb and the staff are a credit to the local management

Distance of room from main hotel, especially in the rain.
Menu repetitive.
The hotel needs to sharpen its knives in order to be able to cut the meat dishes, or buy better quality meat .

Situated conveniently for all seaside local towns. Beautiful position overlooking the estuary.

Positives -Room 211 Large, lovely room, Extremely clean, beautiful view overlooking estuary. Small Negatives - the shower area needed regroouting in some areas. It was a shame really because the rest of the bathroom was excellent. The pillows were a little hard.
We had dinner at the hotel and the food was good however the service was so slow even though it wasn’t particularly busy and the staff came across as indifferent. They had no idea about dining etiquette eg there were no desert spoons or forks on the table so we asked for them, 5 minutes passed and nothing, so my husband had to go to find a member of staff as our desert was going cold, they said they would bring them over. With no apology the waitress placed two spoons in the middle of the table still no forks and walked off. Sad really because it wasn’t a pleasant dining experience for our anniversary. Breakfasts were excellent and service was good,
However on the other hand, eating at the pub restaurant situated on the site was a great experience, nice atmosphere, food excellent and the staff were so friendly and knew how to serve you. In our opinion they should give the staff in the hotel lessons in etiquette.
Overall we had a good stay.

Lovely location on the estuary. Comfortable room and enjoyed a good dinner at the restaurant. As we were on a tripadvisor deal we thought the whole break was excellent value.

I had made several calls to travel zoo and the hotel stating my surname was Gater not Hobbitsden which is part of my email address, on checking in we were still under hobbitsden? The sauna in the male changing room was not working, we feel we should have been told this when we booked in.

Not the most enjoyable as far as sleeping very noisy in corridors out side our room due to fire doors closings with aloud bang I would suggest the hotel invest in slow close doors as in many others have done.

The location of the hotel is excellent. I would however say that in order to really benefit you need to pay the extra for an estuary view room.

The only thing that let the hotel down was the restaurant. The package came with three course meal on the first night. The food was a big let down in the evening and I would rather had a bed and breakfast deal. The breakfast was very good!

Disorganised and unhelpful staff on the 2nd day of breakfast - ended up not having cooked breakfast/coffee. We were pointed to the table just been vacated. Nobody to set the table or taking an order even though we asked twice. Eventually, we gave up and decided not to order a cooked breakfast/coffee.

The quality of the food served is excellent. I did compliment the evening chef, but the same is true of the breakfast food too. Thank you.
