The AA Hotel Guide 2017 describes Fredrick's Hotel, Restaurant & Spa as a "stylish and well-run hotel set in attractive grounds" on the edge of Maidenhead.
The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant serves a classic British menu influenced by modern French cuisine. You can eat in the formal restaurant or outside on the heated terrace. Afternoon tea is served daily (at an extra cost), and make sure to check out the bar with its Gin Pantry -- an eclectic selection of gins from around the world, served on the rocks, with tonic water and fresh raspberries, or neat.
Popular as a weekend retreat beyond the hustle and bustle of London, Fredrick's boasts a spa with an indoor-and-outdoor pool, a steam room, a relaxation area and sun loungers (minimum age to use the spa is 16; minimum age for treatments is 18). You can hop on a train at Paddington railway station and be at the hotel within the hour.
Windsor -- with its royal castle and ancient parkland roamed by deer, and home to Legoland Windsor Resort -- is less than 20 minutes' drive away. You can head to the High Street to watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony on certain days.
Ascot Racecourse and the pretty Thames-side towns of Sonning, Henley and Marlow, are within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel. Reading, known for the 12th-century abbey ruins built by Henry I and its restaurants along the river, is around 25 minutes' drive.
