"We expected the hotel to be noisey and hard to negotiate due to construction and remodeling of the lobby. We found it to be well signed and quite. The complimentary buffet style breakfast was well done and the endless Mimosas werea nice touch. We were even upgraded to a King Room without asking."

Map & Directions

If you can fly into Monterey regional airport, it’s easiest to take a taxi to the hotel. The journey only takes 10 minutes, and renting a car is probably more hassle than it’s worth -- parking is expensive and there are numerous one-way streets in the area. The nearest international airports are San Jose (about 80 minutes away) or San Francisco (just under two hours' drive) and the hotel provides both self-parking and valet parking (extra charge).

On the coast among the wineries and beaches of central California lies the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay. This child-friendly property is also home to the area’s largest day spa and Monterey's original craft brewery.

The hotel is set on a historic plaza and is within walking distance of the vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf and Monterey Bay Aquarium (ask at the hotel about tickets -- they are the same price as when you buy direct, but are valid for two days instead of one). It's also a good location for business travelers (Monterey Conference Center is just next door), and Santa Cruz and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park are both about an hour's drive for day trips.

Children are welcomed with warm cookies at check-in and automatic membership into the Portola Pirates kids club for ages 3-12. The first stay at the hotel as a Portola Pirate includes a souvenir Portola Pirate Bag and self-guided treasure hunt map for buried treasure.

The hotel does not have air conditioning, but all nautical-style bedrooms have ceiling fans and large windows or patio doors that open to the sound of the ocean (and the occasional seagull or seal). Most rooms overlook the city or the pool courtyard. Upgrade to a Harbor View Room on the fifth or sixth floor for impressive sea views at night. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby or bar, but available for an extra charge in the guest rooms.

On site, Jacks Restaurant & Lounge is a well-known local's restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the California coast. Craft brewery Peter B’s Brewpub is the “downtown hot spot for beers,” says The Huffington Post.

Enjoyed Most: We expected the hotel to be noisey and hard to negotiate due to construction and remodeling of the lobby. We found it to be well signed and quite. Other Comments: We also purchased two vouchers for the dinner for two at Jack's restaurant in the hotel. Our son and his Fiancé met us at the hotel to celebrate their engagement. We used both vouchers for dinner and Jack's provided complimentary champagne for a toast. We have never eaten at Jack's on prior stays at the hotel. Boy have we been missing out. The food, service and reasonable prices are 5 star. We'll be back.

Enjoyed Most: Location is great
Other Comments: The construction is really right in the middle of the hotel and they should close the hotel to remodel it.

Enjoyed Most: The location and the service were excellent.
Other Comments: The pulley system at the fitness center was missing some essential parts like a bicep curl bar. I had requested a king bed over the phone, but when I arrived it seemed that the reservation was not noted.

Enjoyed Most: The lovely room had a beautiful view of Monterey Bay. The room included a refrigerator and we had a microwave by request for no additional charge. We will definitely go back.
Other Comments: The construction going on really didn't bother us.

Enjoyed Most: Breakfast was good
Other Comments: Renovations meant ongoing noise, favourite restaurant closed, room facing construction, heater temperature control off meant s hot and cold night of sleep.
Thomas Jan 04, 2017 Santa Cruz, CA, United States
Enjoyed Most: The location of the hotel. However, the $20 parking fee is the most expensive part of the stay.
Other Comments: It is under construction, so not as easy as it used to be.
