Overview

This landmark hotel was constructed less than one block from Central Park in 1927 and reopend in 2009, updating its traditional French décor with fashion-forward Parisian pop including a zebra-striped marble lobby with velvet settees. The 4-star hotel is in the heart of the Upper Easter Side and within a five-minute walk of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the designer shops on Madison Avenue.

Guest accommodations are sedated compared to the public spaces but still ultra-luxe with ivory-colored Italian linens, oak furnishings, grass-cloth walls and more closet space than most Manhattan apartments. Marble bathrooms serve as a soothing oasis from the chaotic city with sunken tubs for two and TVs hidden in the mirrors. Modern luxuries like free Wi-fi, Sub-Zero freezers and touch-screen panel controls for window shades and Bang & Olufsen sound system are included in all rooms.

Upgraded accommodations feel like pied-a-terres with foyers, sofa beds in the living rooms, private bedrooms, additional bathrooms, kitchens and views of Madison Avenue. Those looking to splurge can book the country’s largest penthouse, totalling 12,000 square feet and including five bedrooms and a rooftop terrace running nearly the entire length of the building. For $95, the pet-friendly hotel offers custom collars, leashes, portable water bowls and waste bags for four-legged guests.

Despite being surrounded by world-class restaurants, the hotel itself is a dining destination for traveling foodies and discerning locals, as it is home to the Mark Restaurant, headed by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. For a decadent night in, the full menu is available for room service. The property is also home to the Frédéric Fekkai salon, state-of-the-art fitness center and a 1960s-inspired bar with twinkling lights and cow-print couches. Partnering with Bergdorf Goodman, all guests have 24/7 access to the high-end department store and its personal shoppers.
