Why We Love This Hotel

  • This cosy hotel is in a picturesque village in Northumberland, 10 minutes' drive from Hadrian's Wall
  • The restaurant serves local produce and has won multiple awards for sustainability
  • You can stargaze at the on-site observatory, under the darkest skies in England (supplements apply)

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (supplements apply). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property has impressive eco-friendly credentials. It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17, the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, the Sustainable Business Award in the 2019 Catey Awards, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

Our thanks to the staff who were very pleasant and professional despite the uncertainty they were facing at this present time. We would like to wish everyone at Battlesteads good luck and good fortune. As soon as we're able we will be looking to make a return visit.

My husband who is an amatuer astonomy I bought the offer as a gift for him. Two friends wanted to go with us and they loved it. The visit to the observatory on Monday night great and the stars came out just as the session finished but Chris the lecturer gave his time for a further 45 minutes so everyone got a wonderful look at the stars. We spent time visiting museums and Hadrian's Wall on the way to Wark. Then visited Seahouses, Alnmouth Alnwick Book shop, Hardy's fishing museum had a wonderful day and then on the way home stopped in Barnard Castle and visited Bowes Museum it was a wonderful break despite the concerns over the virus. The hotel kept the tables spread out to minimise contact but the log burning fire was still great.

The 8 course menu was a good experience but not all of our party enjoyed each course. Husband and friend don't eat smoked salmon, etc. The meal on the Monday night fantastic as 3 of us were on Slimming World we had to be careful in what we ate but the breakfasts lovely.

We received a warm welcome, it was easy to check in and we were shown personally to our room. The room was very clean, warm and comfortable with a hospitality tray containing high quality biscuits, fruit bowl and a wide range of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. Everything was sparkling and all the staff made it clear that we only had to ask for information or if we had any further requirements and they would do their best to oblige. The food was local and the chef could have competed on master chef and probably won! No wonder the hotel has won awards for its green approach.
