Why We Love It

  • This 17th-century hotel is in a rural Devon village
  • It's a 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park
  • There's an elegant restaurant and a cosy bar with a fireplace

Lifton Hall Hotel is housed in three ivy-clad 17th-century cottages with colourful window boxes. The hotel is a few minutes' drive from the Devon-Cornwall border and is in easy reach of the pretty countryside in both counties.

It's 10 minutes' drive from Cornwall's ancient capital Launceston, which is known for its Norman castle, steam railway and independent shops, and a 20-minute drive from the market town of Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding National Beauty, which is dotted with picturesque villages and is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, is around 15 minutes' drive away. Padstow is around an hour's drive from the hotel. It has a lively port and noted fish restaurants.

One of Lifton Hall Hotel's highlights is its locally sourced food. You can eat in the restaurant, which features rich fabrics and Gothic windows, or in the rustic-style bar area, which has wood-beamed ceilings and a fireplace. Devon Life readers voted the restaurant's Sunday roast the best in Devon. There is also an outside patio with tables and chairs.

The hotel's 10 bedrooms are individually decorated in a cosy, country style. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities, as well as views of the village or the countryside. Some rooms have features such as wood-panelled walls and 4-poster beds.

Informal atmosphere and the helpful staff.

Rooms near the road can be noisy due to traffic, ask for a room at the rear. Food was very good value and quality.

Generally the staff were friendly and helpful.

The shower took ages for the hot water to come through. On the Saturday night there were some local young people in the bar using a lot of bad language, which was not stopped by the staff. Service at breakfast was poor as on the first morning ringing the bell had no effect at all and the toast we ordered was forgotten and when it was finally served it was hardly toasted at all. There was only 3 people having breakfast at the tine. There was little or no atmosphere in the hotel at all although I accept this might be the case if more residents were there. The decor generally was dark and a little dated. It was also a little disappointing that nothing was done at all for my wife’s birthday on the Sunday, which a member of staff did know about.
