Why We Love This Hotel

  • Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, is less than 30 minutes' drive away
  • The hotel's WineGlass Restaurant features an extensive selection of wines and champagnes
  • Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house, and Woburn Safari Park are both 25 minutes' drive away
  • The riverside hotel has a characterful 13th-century Tithe Barn for functions and events

The Barns Hotel is in a "tranquil" (The AA) location beside the River Great Ouse, on the outskirts of Bedford.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, which has over 1000 animals and offers road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, famous for being the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House is less than 20 minutes' drive away -- this ruined mansion has views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library area within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio overlooking the River Great Ouse. The recently refurbished terrace now has a pizza oven, and fresh pizzas are available every Tuesday and Friday.

The hotel's electric riverboat is available to hire during the Summer months for cruises up the River Great Ouse.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished and have spacious bathrooms. All have free Wi-Fi.

Breakfast was poor, limited food, poor service. 20 minutes wait for coffee. No bacon had to order individuallly. No bread for toast. Evening meal was quite tasteless, brownie was cold so not very pleasant.

Most of the staff were very friendly . It was very pleasant to sit and have our afternoon tea with a view of the river , although I was very tired by this point and felt my eyes closing at one point .
Other Comments
Very noisy guests ( and their friends ) in the room next to us . I complained 4 times to the night receptionist . Didn’t get asleep until the rowdy guests decided to depart the room at approx 1am . They then returned some time later to wake us yet again in the early hours of the morning . When I complained to the breakfast supervisor she was very defensive and offered a derisory afternoon tea for one guest ( which sha also said we would have to return for on another day ) as compensation . She simply said “ we can’t be held responsible for other guests behaviour “ . The noisy guests could, and should , have been asked to leave the hotel in my opinion . A member of the management team took over our complaint as the breakfast supervisor refused to offer anything other than the one afternoon tea or a bottle of Prosecco ( even though I pointed out several times that I don’t drink alcohol ) . We were offered afternoon tea for two and he came to our room and apologised sincerely . We had booked as part of our “ Travelzoo deal “ an executive room . On check-in we were told that we had only a double but that the executive rooms “ are only larger than a double anyway “ as if that was unimportant and were told that we had FREE water ( 2 small bottles ) and a box of chocolates ( a box with 4 chocolates in , WOOP-DE-DOO !! ) by way of compensation . We had bought £25 towards our evening meal as part of the Travelzoo deal . I felt that the food was over-priced , especially as most of the food had been re-heated or kept warm in my opinion . The only thing that we were certain was cooked-to-order was the sweet-potato fries . On the whole a very unsatisfactory and tiring week-end . Not the relaxing one we had been hoping for. .
