Set in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and whitewashed villages in the Torres Vedras district, the 5-star Dolce CampoReal is a grand golf and spa resort an hour’s drive north of Lisbon.
The region is particularly known for its vineyards and wine tours, and the beaches and cliff-walks of the Costa de Prata are a 20-minute drive away. The medieval town of Obidos is 30 minutes by car and is also worth a visit.
Back at the resort, there’s a challenging 18-hole golf course and an impressive spa with a vast menu of massages, body scrubs, facials and detoxes. There is also a heated indoor pool, sauna, eucalyptus steam room, and an outdoor pool with a Jacuzzi, plus a children’s pool. Plus, fitness gurus can work out at the gym, play tennis and try horseback riding (lessons are available for an extra charge).
Generously sized rooms reflect the expansive dimensions of the resort. Expect beige, brown and jade tones that complement dark-wood furnishings and abstract oil paintings. Bathrooms have marble sinks, rainfall showers and deep-soaking tubs. All have private balconies overlooking the golf course, pool or rural landscape, and Wi-Fi is free. Rooms above the pool are more expensive but have a fantastic view.
Portuguese wines also feature prominently at Grande Escholha restaurant, alongside chef Rui Fernandes’s refined interpretation of traditional cuisine. For snacks and tapas, there’s the Sports Club, overlooking the golf course. Homemade jams and other goodies are part of the enormous morning spread in the Manjapão breakfast room.
