Hotel Jeronimos 8 is a minimalist property in the historic Belem district by the River Tagus. The hotel is opposite the Jeronimos Monastery, a monumental UNESCO World Heritage Site with carved stone architecture. It was built in the 15th century to commemorate the safe return of explorer Vasco da Gama from his inaugural voyage to India.
The hotel is just around the corner from Pasteis de Belem, a family-run bakery that sells traditional pasteis de nata (custard tarts) from its ornately tiled premises. The Cultural Centre of Belem, which hosts theatre performances and concerts, and the Berardo Collection Museum of modern art are both less than 10 minutes' walk away.
The hotel is a 20-minute walk from the Torre de Belem, a 16th-century tower on the bank of the River Tagus that is described by Lonely Planet as a "pearly-grey chess piece" with "filigree stonework" and "meringue-like cupolas." The new Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology and the Central Tejo -- "Lisbon's answer to Tate Modern" (The Guardian) -- are also 20 minutes away on foot.
A buffet breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt and pastries is available in the dining room or on the hotel's patio. The hotel also has a bar, which serves traditional custard tarts and Portuguese wine. Rooms have a contemporary look, marble bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have views of the Jeronimos Monastery and the Tower of Belem.
