Why We Love This Hotel

  • The only AAA 4-Diamond resort in Charlottesville offers Blue Ridge Mountain scenery in a historic setting
  • With roots that trace back to Thomas Jefferson, the resort's oldest buildings were originally constructed in 1834
  • Activities abound with hiking trails, 26 tennis courts, three swimming pools, a full-service spa and four restaurants spread over 573 acres

This AAA 4-Diamond resort offers guests a glimpse into the past on top of a host of activities -- from spa days and swimming to hiking and tennis matches -- plus modern amenities like marble bathrooms, in-room coffee makers and free Wi-Fi.

Rooms decorated in neutral hues with pops of bright color feature either a king or two queen beds, as well as colonial colonial accents -- like prints from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars --that mirror the resort's storied past. For more outdoor space, we recommend upgrading to a Premium Room, which comes with its own private balcony or patio -- some with lakeside views.

Dining options at the Boar's Head run the gambit from poolside snacks from the Firefly Bar & Grill to sustainably harvested oysters at the resort's Mill Room restaurant. Although there's no shortage of on-site activities, the University of Virginia is less than ten minutes away. In addition to strolling the school's historic campus, guests have complimentary access to UVA's 33,000 square-foot McArthur Squash Center.

The Mill Room staff and food were wonderful. We would eat there again. If we were to rate it, five out of five stars.
Other Comments
It was advertised as balcony rooms overlooking the gardens or courtyards, yet our window looked straight at ductwork. Not even sunshine! The first thing said to us upon checking in was not “ Hello” or “Welcome”, or even “How can I help you?”. It was “checking in” without even a smile. The most unwelcome feeling. Front desk service was inhospitable.

Nice staff; good food at the restaurant (but quite pricey); nice (but small) balcony in the room.
Other Comments
Small room and difficult to sleep because of noisy climate control system and the inappropriately heavy blanket. You either had to use only the sheet -- which was not enough -- or the very heavy blanket, which was much too warm. Also, the resort fee made it a poor value, given that we didn't use any of the resort's features and activities.

Travel zoo needs to make it clear that Boars Head charges your card for the room and the resort fee prior to your arrival. They will ask for a card for incidentals at check in. Also, even though there is a resort fee they tack on a “service fee” and “gratuities” on top of that. I had a massage and tipped with cash only to learn at check out they already tacked on a 15% gratuity and “we cannot take that off the bill even if you already tipped with cash”. It’s a beautiful property and the beds are extremely comfortable.

I loved my stay at Boar's Hear. The room was lovely and the grounds beautiful. Easy access to all area attractions. The $30 credit per day allowed me to eat there once each day with no charge so quite a value. Loved the power green salad at the racquet club. Would definitely return to this resort.

Everyone was so nice. Coffee and tea are available all day long with treats at the end of the day. The grounds are beautiful. We wished we booked an extra night.
Other Comments
We think that one of the great things about being there offseason was the quiet and the ability the staff had to cater to us. The only sad part was the restaurant options were very limiting to the Rackets Club. They were really nice for both dinner and breakfast but I have been to the buffet once and that was 4 star for sure. The food was ok enough and the staff was really wonderful. They even made me a special warm cider drink for dinner.
