Lonsdale House, in the town of Bowness, has views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells from many of its windows.
The shops, restaurants, bars and attractions of Bowness, including the World of Beatrix Potter, are within 10 minutes' walk. You could also visit Wray Castle on Windermere's western shore -- it's perfect for kids with its dressing-up areas and adventure playground -- or take a boat trip with Windermere Lake Cruises, which stops at locations along the shore.
The hotel's décor is on the traditional side, with antique furniture, heavy doors framing the impressive entrance, and original cornicing dating back to the 1850s. There's a lounge with board games and a DVD library, and a bar that's open late. Breakfast is served from 8:30-9:30am, and includes cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and full English options that are cooked to order.
There are 11 bedrooms, salwith free Wi-Fi, and welcome toffees and a glass of sherry each. Rooms at the top of the building have more of those lake views, although there is some road noise for those rooms at the front of the house. Upgrade to a deluxe room for a 4-poster bed.
