Hotel Rival offers trendy accommodation in one of Stockholm's most up-and-coming city-centre areas. Overlooking a tree-lined square in the bohemian Södermalm district, this glitzy lodging, owned by ABBA's Benny Andersson, is housed in a converted Art Deco cinema dating from the 1930s. It's well placed for exploring Stockholm's sights, with the nearest metro station a 5-minute walk away and Gamla Stan, the city's Old Town and site of the Royal Palace, around 20 minutes' walk from the hotel.
The buzzing lobby lounge is the focal point of the Hotel Rival, and is decked with funky murals, neon lights and crimson drapes. Guests can head upstairs to the Art Deco-inspired bar, with its velvet seats, mirrored accents and regular DJ nights, and sample bistro fare on plush banquettes in the hotel’s cosy, wood-panelled restaurant. There's a homely all-day café with a pastry counter and outdoor seating, as well as a 700-seat theatre hosting live entertainment.
Guestrooms are lined with sleek wood and hung with black-and-white prints. All the rooms have free Wi-Fi, flatscreen TVs, Blu-ray players and mini bars. Higher-category rooms add bathtubs, sitting areas and extra wardrobes, while some feature work areas and balconies with views of Mariatorget square. Room service is available 24 hours a day.
