Overview
The Best Western Burnside Hotel overlooks Lake Windermere, which is described as "the queen of Lake District lakes" by Lonely Planet. It's also around 10 minutes' walk from Bowness, where you'll find shops, tea rooms, pubs, restaurants and The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. The village is also the starting point for a variety of lake cruises.
Grasmere -- the former home of poet William Wordsworth -- is 25 minutes' drive away from the hotel. Here you can take a guided tour around Dove Cottage and then visit The Wordsworth Museum -- which displays the poet's letters, poems and journals. Afterwards you could visit The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop to sample one of the region's most popular treats.
The Lake District countryside is ideal for walking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits. There's a 2-hour route from the hotel, along the shore of Lake Windermere, to Wray Castle -- a Victorian neo-Gothic building that is managed by the National Trust. This route includes a river crossing from Bowness to Sawrey which costs 50p per person, each way.
The hotel's Silhouettes Restaurant serves British cuisine and there's also a bar and a lounge. The hotel has a spa, an indoor swimming pool, two hot tubs, a sauna and a steam room. Wi-Fi is free.
