Why We Love It

  • This Cumbrian hideaway is "perfectly located for touring the Lakes" (The AA), & is near Lake Windermere
  • Dinner in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant is preceeded by drinks & canapés, & followed by coffee & petits fours
  • The recently refurbished hotel is set in the picturesque, fell-ringed town of Ambleside

Overview

Rothay Manor Hotel & Fine Dining is a country-house hotel set in Ambleside, a pretty Lakeland town with remnants of a surprisingly industrial past. A quaint water mill, a 17th-century stone bridge and cosy, slate-roofed pubs are a few of the quirks you'll find in this fell-encircled town.

There is an abundance of things to do in the surrounding area. You can join a launch cruise from Waterhead (within a 15-minute walk of the hotel), and Lakeland Pony Treks operates from Troutbeck (12 minutes' drive away), and provides another way to see the undulating terrain. Alternatively, drive 20 minutes and hike trails lined with ancient beech trees at Grizedale Forest, or explore the personal treasures of John Ruskin at his home Brantwood (open daily; Wed-Sun in winter).

The Grade II-listed hotel, built in 1823, holds 2 AA Rosettes for its fine-dining cuisine. As well as Sunday lunch and afternoon tea, the restaurant serves a menu of gourmet dishes; we like the sound of the Cumbrian partridge soaked in Madeira and flavoured with star anise, or the cauliflower cheese made with truffled camembert.

Bedrooms have Egyptian cotton sheets and feather-down duvets and pillows. Classic rooms are at the side or rear of the hotel with views over the River Rothay towards Loughrigg Fell, or over Ambleside towards Wansfell Pike. Front-facing Superior rooms have a balcony or terrace with garden views, and Suites are great for those who like a little more space.

Guests get free use of the swimming pool and gym at the Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa (subject to availability), which is a 10-minute walk away. Wi-Fi is free. Dogs can stay in some rooms for £15 per dog, per stay (enquire on booking).

The breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. Everything was homemade and cooked to order. The fresh fruit and freshly squeezed orange juice were amazing

The breakfast was good and the staff and service was particularly good

Dinner was really poor We both chose the vegetarian option as our main course and it was a very small portion and tasteless We were unable to have afternoon tea because we had not pre-booked although there was nothing on the website to state that this was required and it wasn't that busy.

A short walk into Ambleside and a great location for the Langdales, Hawkshead and Coniston as well as Windemere&Bowness and Rydal, Thirlmere, Grasmere and Keswick with accessible car parking in a country house hotel Excellent and extensive breakfast with efficient and effective waiter service. Table linen and good quality cutlery, stylish food. Dining room overlooking garden. Walk in shower room and bedroom well presented - clearly we had a bedroom for clients with disabilities. Well serviced and with all amenities as listed Prosecco on arrival - well chilled and a large glass too.
Other Comments
This is a country house hotel and reception is low key - billing can be slow although we did not experience that ourselves. May have groups of people on courses - they can be loud!!

Having firstlass service from all the staff -from arrival to departure. We were celebrating our golden wedding anniversary and it was perfect in every way. Lovely room, excellent food, beautifully presented and explained to us by lovely waiting staff. We were made to feel very special. Thank you all so very much.
