Overview

Dating back to the early 1900s, Oglebay Resort offers year-round recreation and family-friendly accommodations on 1,700 acres of West Virginia's picturesque landscape. The property was originally owned by Earl W. Oglebay, an Ohio Valley native and Cleveland industrialist, until his death in 1926, when he left the estate to the people of Wheeling.

Today, Oglebay remains the largest self-sustaining city municipal park in the country and offers a championship golf course, 5,000-square-foot spa, the Good Zoo, a ski and snowboard area, miles of trails, a horse riding academy, picnic shelters, tennis courts, a nature center, and the Oglebay Institute which includes the Mansion Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The resort is also known for its popular annual events, including the Winter Festival of Lights, Oglebayfest in the fall and the Antiques Show & Sale.

Travelzoo members stay in the original sections of Wilson Lodge, placing them near the indoor pool and dining facilities. Byrd Deluxe Rooms include LCD televisions, free Wi-Fi, Keurig coffeemakers and the option of one queen, one king or two double beds. Upgrading to a Lakeside Preferred Room adds a wet bar, mini-fridge a small seating area, and views of the West Virginia hillsides and holiday light displays (seasonal).

Offering diverse dining options, the resort’s restaurants are guaranteed to please even the pickiest palates with regionally sourced cuisine, special menus catering to dietary restrictions and fine dining overlooking Schenk Lake.

Enjoyed Most: I absolutely loved the shops at Oglebay, the Museum area, and the entertainment in the common area. We've visited Oglebay in the summer and this seemed like an ideal time to visit for the winter, but the quality of the visit just wasn't there. I would definitely like to give them another try because we had such a great visit over our summer vacation.
Other Comments: The room was not ready or clean upon arrival. Check-in was listed at 4 pm, we weren't able to get in our room until close to 6 pm. Also, the room was dirty upon arrival. I spoke three separate times to the front desk to ask Housekeeping to come up (dirty cups on counters in bathroom, spills on table in bedroom area). Also, we paid $11 per person to book a drive on the trolley through the lights. The driver gave us all paper towels to clean our windows since the condensation was so bad. I would have preferred to just drive my own vehicle through the display and I would have had I known the condition of the trolley. The swimming area was disappointing. There were towels everywhere (noon and evening when we visited), it just didn't seem like it was being well kept.

Enjoyed Most: The facilities, room, and staff were wonderful. The only negative was that they stopped serving breakfast at 10:00 am.
Other Comments: When we booked through Travelzoo we thought we were taking our grandkids to see the lights; we thought that Travelzoo indicated the lights would be up until February. When we arrived at Oglebay we were informed that the last night for the lights was the night before we arrived. We are not sure where the mixup ocurred. We will be sure to go back earlier next year.

Other Comments: With the good things been mentioned above the only complaint we have is the TravelZoo booking has $25 per day resort credit, we only got it for the first day. The second day we asked service desk, they said is given on the first day's gift card. But it was only for one day. We showed agent our booking paper which indicat credit for per day. They asked us for the spend gift card to check, but we throw that empty card away already. It is not big deal for losing one day gift credit but they should have their record how much credit has given to each guest.

Enjoyed Most: The atmosphere that the resort provides is simply beautiful. The hot chocolate and cookies at night added onto the visit. The music in the lobby was amazing!

Enjoyed Most: The Christmas Lights decor. The entertainment the hotel provided was good. Just a very enjoyable little get away. I liked the glass factory and mansion tour too. I wanted to go skiing but it was just a little to cold the night we stayed. I can not believe how much there is to do at Oglebay!!!!

Other Comments: We were there at an especially busy time and things were initially confusing (I.e.,there were various check-in points and weren't sure which one we should be in) plus we had to wait over an hour to check into our room, but staff was very helpful and professional and were doing the best under the circumstances. We dined in the glasseorks grill while we waited for our room and both enjoyed our meals. The room was very nice and the hotel and grounds were beautiful and festive.

Enjoyed Most: The natural surroundings, Christmas decorations of the lodge, live music each night in the Hickman Lounge area
Other Comments: Complicated process for making dinner reservations for Christmas day, even though a guest at the lodge for two nights. Had to call housekeeping late in the afternoon to get room made up.
Austin Dec 28, 2016 Reynoldsburg, OH, United States
Enjoyed Most: We enjoyed the holiday decorations inside the lodge as well as the lights outside. We also enjoyed a dip in the swimming pool. It is very nice that there is a shallow end for the smaller children.
Other Comments: We were disappointed that the room was not ready until almost 6pm; however, once inside we were pleased that the room was large enough for 4 people and that it was in much better condition than the one we stayed in 2 years ago, which had a musty smell.
