Tucked away at the foot of the Pentland Hills, around 20 minutes' drive from central Edinburgh, Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club is an ideal middle ground between the country and city.

Scotland's capital is full of impressive sights. Edinburgh Castle dates from the 12th century and houses the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny. To see new architecture meeting old, head to Holyrood, where the contemporary Scottish Parliament Building and 16th-century Holyrood Palace (the home of the Queen in Scotland) sit opposite each other. Holyrood Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also where you'll find Arthur's Seat -- the remains of a 350 million-year-old extinct volcano.

The hotel has two restaurants -- the Pentland and the Brasserie -- which both have views of the grounds. The Pentland Restaurant serves locally sourced Scottish fare, including herbs from its own garden, while the more informal Brasserie serves grilled meats and pasta dishes.

The hotel is popular with golfers -- facilities include a driving range and two 18-hole courses. There are also tennis courts, a heated indoor pool, a gym and a sauna.

All rooms have views of the golf course or grounds. They also have Sky Sports, Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Warm bedrooms with good beds and shower with plenty of hot water. Would return for accommodation without food. Ate out on second day. Will be contacting manager.

Distance to room. Lack of attention to detail: no porter offered, no dessert fork, no bread tongs at breakfast, had to order tea twice. Food very disappointing despite paying supplements. Prosecco which was part of the deal was not offered. Purchased a bottle of wine. Failed to advise us of service charge so we ended up paying for service twice.

Mum and daughter treat. Lovely setting and beautiful in the Autumn sunshine. One thing that disappointed was no log fires in the hearth making it bit lack lustre and ambience lost in such a fine building. Even candles or fake glow would have helped.

Nice and relaxing place to stay. We particularly liked the swimming pool, the cocktail bar and the restaurant overlooking the grounds/golf course.

Would definitely go back to this Hotel. A special mention to Margaret in the Golf Shop. I had messed up with my booked golf day and she sorted it out for me. She was a star.

Room was nicely decorated and spacious
Other Comments
Food, small menu which often can reflect beautifully executed food, supplements on most dishes, which were not cheap. Supplement on Cod( and all other mains with the exception of pork and risotto. Additional charge for service in Pentland restaurant, for being served, surely that is what a customer expects: service in the dining room. Brasserie lacked atmosphere as did James Braid Bar. Most rooms located in modern extension which is not what pictures reflect.

Quite a long way from Edinburgh so if arriving by train you need either an expensive taxi ( from £36+ tip) or to catch the bus from outside the railway station on Princess st to directly outside the hotels driveway. This hotel is fantastic but really not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties as it’s lots of long corridors and lots of stairs.
