Fota Island Resort
Why We Love This Hotel
- Beautiful location on private Fota Island, 20 minutes from Cork
- Home to three golf courses, one of which hosted the 2014 Irish Open
- Top spa on site & woodland views from some rooms
- Fota Island Wildlife Park is a 5-minute drive
Its private island location and the world-class golfing on offer are among the compelling reasons guests keep coming to the 5-star Fota Island resort. Located just 20 minutes from Cork city by car, the hotel is set within the grounds of a former aristocratic home.
A 5-minute drive away is Fota Island Wildlife Park (the only one in Ireland), featuring more than 80 species of animals, and the restored Fota House & gardens. Further afield, the Midleton Distillery and Shangerry Pottery are worth a visit and there are regular boat tours leaving for Spike Island, which is home to a historic fort.
There are three championship golf courses on the island and Fota Island Resort itself hosted the 2014 Irish Open (as well as in 2001 and 2002). There's also one of Ireland’s most acclaimed spas on site, which (among its list of 60 treatments) has a unique “walking river” that is recommended for golfers to improve their swings. There is also a full fitness suite, an indoor swimming pool and a hypotherapy suite.
The bedrooms are spacious and decorated in subtle shades, with rainforest showers in the bathrooms. Expect free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities and views of the surrounding woodland or golf courses.
When hungry, the fine-dining Fota Restaurant is open all day, with a breakfast buffet until 11am and dinner until 9:30pm. The menu features dishes such as local cheese, meat and fish, such as quail kiev with white truffle butter, duo of Kerry Hill lamb, and Ardsallagh goat’s cheese with beetroot panna cotta. There is also the Amber Lounge with a good range of local whiskeys, and the Spike Bar & Clubhouse on the golf course.
