Briery Wood Country House Hotel is a 19th-century property just a stone's throw from the shores of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake.

You can hire a rowing boat from Low Wood Watersports Centre, which is an 8-minute walk away, and paddle along to one of the jetties for a spot of lunch in a nearby village.

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and nearby National Trust car park are a 20-minute drive away, and mark the starting point of The Langdale Pikes walk. With steep climbs and dramatic descents, the trail passes Dungeon Ghyll -- a deep ravine with a 60-foot waterfall, referenced by William Wordsworth in his poem "The Idle Shepherd Boy". Loughrigg Fell is a 14-minute drive away and has impressive views of Great Langdale. Troutbeck village, with its stone cottages and emerald-green valley, is an 8-minute drive away.

The hotel restaurant holds an AA Rosette and has a home-grown, local-is-best philosophy; expect dishes like Herdwick lamb, freshly caught salmon from Cartmel and mature cheeses smoked over Cumbrian oak, as well as traditional Sunday lunch.

Dogs can come along for an extra £20 per dog, per stay (payable to the hotel direct), and they are given a welcome pack, a blanket and treats on arrival. All 23 bedrooms have a TV, a radio, an alarm clock, a hair dryer and a telephone. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

Great 2 nights away. The hotel is simply elegant and decor to a high standard. We were welcomed by a chap who must've said the same welcome speech hundreds of times but it felt like the first time to us, very friendly and welcoming. Room lovely with our own table and chairs outside in the gardens. Only had breakfasts but again a class dining experience. We have visited the other hotels in this chain and I think they are exceptional. We will be back.

The hotel was really lovely, the setting and gardens were beautiful. The rooms and cleanliness were very good.

My only criticism would be that the evening restaurant menu was very limited with only 5 main choices, and we were informed that this was the only menu and it would not change. So on our second evening we decided to eat out.

Hotel appears to have been refurbished About 2 miles or so outside of Ambleside with little around it but easy to drive into main town centre and car is best option for getting around the area. Bus and taxi can be expensive

The hotel was fine but lacked a bit of atmosphere. The staff did not realy understand about the cruise information, other than to say where you could pick up the boat from. We went to Brockhole only to find that there were few options for boarding at this mooring. The staff did not explain this.
