Most Detroit visitors tend to stay at the more corporate hotels downtown, but some travellers will want to explore the part of the city that's been called one of the "best Detroit neighbourhoods to spend a weekend" (Thrillist), one of the city's "hottest up-and-coming areas" (The Telegraph) and even the 'hood that "helped lead the city's renaissance" (Food & Wine). If that's you, the Trumbull and Porter is where you want to stay.

Rooms at this industrial-chic boutique feature exposed concrete floors and marble desktops, while the walls are accented with art from Detroit-area artists. Thoughtful details include bottle openers attached to the desks and flat-panel 50-inch TVs, while the bathrooms are bright, fully renovated and roomy. The hotel's Red Dunn Kitchen features American cuisine, outside courtyard seating and a fire pit, and there's also a coffee shop on site.

Heads up, foodies -- Eater says the Corktown neighbourhood is "the epicenter of the city’s restaurant surge and home to some of its most beloved bars (both old and new)." If you prefer beers poured by the brewers themselves, two craft breweries -- Batch Brewing and Brew Detroit -- are both less than a block from the hotel, while the city's famous Slows Bar BQ and the Sugar House cocktail bar are both a 20-minute walk away.

If you're in town for a concert or a sporting event, the hotel is just a few minutes by car from Comerica Park, Ford Field, the Fox Theater, the Cobo Center and the Motown Museum.

The public spaces (lobby, bar, outside patio) were very nice.

The biggest problem was the mis-booked rooms. I had two Travelzoo vouchers, but the hotel only confirmed one room (both vouchers had the same room associated). When I showed the vouchers, the desk clerk could not help. I was only given my second room after getting Travelzoo customer service involved. Spending the first 30 minutes of my holiday with 3 old college friends standing in a hotel lobby was not great. Beyond that, the place itself is obviously a (barely) renovated low end hotel. Other than a fresh coat of paint and some trendy furniture, it is still the same cinder blocked wall place it was. The bathroom had mold on the walls. The neighborhood was....well, gentrifying is the kindest thing I can say about it.
