A $9 million renovation brought new life to this boutique property, located just west of downtown in the Corktown neighbourhood -- an area recently praised by the Chicago Tribune: "as up-and-coming as any neighbourhood you'll find in up-and-coming Detroit."

Rooms were refurbished in an industrial-chic style with exposed concrete floors and marble tabletops, while the walls are accented with art from Detroit-area artists. Thoughtful details include bottle openers attached to the desks, flat-panel 50-inch TVs and designer furniture (also crafted by Detroiters), while the bathrooms are bright, fully renovated and roomy. Gated parking is free, as is Wi-Fi.

The on-site Red Dunn Kitchen features American cuisine, outside courtyard seating and a fire pit, while the Burroughs Lounge pours coffee and espresso and serves pastries in the morning. If you prefer beers poured by the brewers themselves, two craft breweries -- Batch Brewing and Brew Detroit -- are both less than a block from the hotel.

Once you arrive and park your car, you may not need it until you leave. The hotel has a fleet of Detroit Bicycles that guests can borrow for quick trips to downtown or the many restaurants in the area -- so many that called Corktown "the forefront of the D's new food frontiers" -- and the city's famous Slows Bar BQ is less than 1.5 kilometres from the hotel. Guests are also just minutes from Comerica Park, Ford Field, the Fox Theatre and the Cobo Centre.

Easy to find off highway. Close to a restaurant that gave free shuttle rides to Little Caesar Arena.

My daughter said she could hear others in nearby rooms. So maybe thin walls.

Chaotic check-in process. Room wasn't prepared on time. No hot water to shower in the morning.

Front bar/restaurant woefully understaffed and unprepared for business on labor day weekend during jazzfest and with U2 in town...but our bartender did her best. She said management knew but did nothing different...

Was disappointed we could not make it the night we reserved for. Sad we could not cancel reservation and get a refund. We did understand that was part of the deal tho. We may try again! :)
