Hotel Al Sole is a historic property with Gothic windows and a canal-front location. It occupies the 15th-century Palazzo Marcello, which was originally built for the Marcello family, who continue to own the property to this day.
The hotel is on the Rio del Gaffaro in Santa Croce, a well-connected, but quiet, part of the city. It is a five-minute walk from Piazzale Roma bus station, providing easy access to the airport, and 10 minutes' walk from Santa Lucia train station. The Gallerie dell'Accademia, which holds "the greatest collection of Venetian paintings in the world" (Fodor's), is a 15-minute walk away. The hotel is 30 minutes' walk from St Mark's Square and less than 20 minutes from the Rialto Bridge.
Breakfast is available from 7:30-10:30 a.m., and when the weather is warm you can dine in the courtyard garden, which is filled with honeysuckle and ivy. There's also a bar for cocktails, coffee and light snacks.
Rooms are simply decorated, and have traditional Venetian-style drapes. Some have views of the garden, others overlook the canal.
