As well as walking in the footsteps of celebrities such as Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, guests at the 5-star Andaz London Liverpool Street will be within 20 minutes of two of the London's most popular Christmas markets -- the Southbank Centre Winter Festical and Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park.

The riverside Southbank Centre Winter Festival (11 November-25 January) has approximately 80 chalets, sellinga range of festive food, drink and gifts. To get to the market, jump on the Central line at Liverpool Street Tube station and change at Bank for the Waterloo & City line. The market is a 5-minute walk from Waterloo station.

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park (10am-10pm, 18 November-2 January) has an array of Christmas stalls, an ice skating rink, an ice bar, a 60-metre-high wheel and a festive circus. Book ahead, though, as the attractions are all very popular. You can reach Hyde Park via the Central line from Liverpool Street, alighting at Marble Arch -- Winter Wonderland is a 5-minute walk from there.

Hello! magazine calls Andaz London Liverpool Street an "architectural masterpiece -- made up of a red brick Victorian exterior juxtaposed with a sleek and trendy modern interior".

This property has six restaurants, including Eastway Brasserie and Miyako, both of which have an AA Rosette. The former specialises in meats on the grill and the latter serves Japanese food. There are five bars including the 1901 Wine Lounge, which has over 160 wines. Breakfast is served in the Grade II-listed 1901 Restaurant.

All guests get access to the 24-hour health club, which has a gym and a steam room. In-room spa treatments are available for an additional cost (must be booked in advance). Wi-Fi is free.

Old Spitalfields Market, which has been running since the 13th century, and 30 St Mary Axe, better known as The Gherkin, are both around five minutes' walk from the hotel. Other local highlights include St Paul's Cathedral.

We love the stark contrast of the Victorian façade against the sleek interiors, with a 6-storey atrium that resembles New York's Guggenheim Museum.

The staff are the Hotel's main asset. We had a minor issue in our room, which eventually was resolved. It was evident that they all seemed to enjoy their job,so always aiming to please. I do question whether a Queen size room was what we had, I would have called it more an executive single. Only because it seemed to be set up up for one person. One bedside table with one lamp on one side of bed and one bathrobe. Extremely good breakfast, more professionally executed on the Sunday than the Saturday. Still excellent none the less.

Not really, close tube station
Other Comments
Poor signage on hotel, difficult to find, plug socket 4 meters from a mirror in the room, only one bedside table, no idea where to go for breakfast and were then directed outside in the cold and rain into another building, weak complimentary cocktails

We were unable to go on the date booked due to surgery. We rang six weeks before the date to ask if we could amend the date and were told no. We therefore lost £159

There was a Christmas Party going on on Friday night and it was noisy. I called reception and they immediately offered us an alternative room. Within 5 mins a host was ready with keys for our new one, which was nicer than the original room. Nothing was too much trouble. The staff couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast was busy and we had to wait a little to get a table. In the meantime the restaurant manager chatted to us and brought us coffee. I would highly recommend.

Decor and grandeur of the hotel

The only criticism would be that breakfast was not kept hot enough. The serving dishes were not on a hot plate and all plates were cold. I appreciate that there was quite a quick turnover of the food but felt that it needed more to keep the food hot whilst on the servery.
