The Kimpton brand's first Vermont property, the Taconic Hotel offers quintessential New England charm on four acres in scenic Manchester. Named after the neighbouring Taconic Mountain range, the property offers a great base from which to take in the "old-world, old-money elegance" (Frommer's) of this picturesque southern Vermont town.

Lauded by the Boston Globe as "a modern take on the grand inns of the early 20th century," the property boasts a main inn complete with a wraparound porch and a fire pit, along with three private cottages, a fitness centre, an outdoor seasonal heated pool (open mid-May through October) and the on-site Copper Grouse restaurant "that's so good it attracts as many locals as guests" (NY Daily News).

The restaurant "celebrates the culinary treasures of Vermont" (Boston Globe) with dishes like cheddar ale soup, cider-brined chicken and maple creme brulee. Order room service, sit out on the restaurant's porch or sip local brews at the bar, lauded by Men's Journal as one of the 20 Best Hotel Bars in America.

Cozy rooms pull design inspiration from the natural surrounds, with soothing earth tones and pops of plaid. Outdoor enthusiasts will especially appreciate the in-room yoga mats and hand-crafted wooden walking sticks. Be sure to pick up a trek map at the front desk, which leads guests to "secret swimming holes, hidden waterfalls and off-the-beaten-track snowshoe trails" (Boston Globe).

The usual Kimpton perks also await on site, with free coffee and tea served in the mornings and a nightly wine hour with complimentary nibbles dished out to guests in the evenings. Enjoy your wine in the hotel's cozy library, which works in partnership with Manchester's local bookstore to display and highlight the best new reads.

For further exploring afield, the Lincoln Family Home, Lye Brook Falls and the Manchester Designer Outlets are all within a 10-minute drive.

the ambiance of the hotel is excellent. The hotel is only three years old but has an old turn of the century feel to it. Everything is lovely. Restaurant is terrific and fits the rest of the atmosphere of the hotel. Large "old" style front porch with rockers. Lovely courtyard area. Welcoming staff.

We did have one problem during our stay. This is a very pet friendly hotel. during our time there it wasn't very busy, but there were many dogs. In a room close to us we had several instances of barking Scotties, as early as 6:30 am. Had to call or visit the front desk on two occasions. Our concern was handled very professionally, but the barking continued, though not as bad. Upon checkout, they took $40 off our two day travelzoo discounted rate; which we thought was very nice of them. I do think that they need to do something about their pet policy. I feel that the pets and their masters should be grouped together on the same floor or area. Thereby they could insulate the non pet guests from the noise. It made no sense to me that they put non pet people next to pet people. Just asking for a problem! You don't expect to have this problem in such a lovely hotel. But like I said the staff was excellent and were responsive. Definitely would stay here in a heartbeat. I just would be proactive about my room placement.

Enjoyed the atmosphere and the look and feel of the site and the hotel. Very much appreciated that they were so welcoming to dogs.

Would recommend that they offer coffee/tea service throughout the day and not only until mid-morning, or at least make it possible for their guests to make coffee/tea in their rooms. Suggest that they have small snack tables out on the porch alongside the rocking chairs for guest to put their pockets, books, tablets, drinks, etc on. This would be very useful.

The location, however there are numerous other options.

The excessive presence of dogs throughout the common areas was both annoying and dangerous. I was bitten by a dog on a long leash while in the library one day, and attacked by a different viscous dog another daynear the elevator. They were urinating on the bushes next to the sitting areas near the pool and barking excessively, even late at night. They were everywhere and not all owners were concerned about the impact their pets had on other guests. Allowing dogs in rooms is one thing, permitting them to room out of control throughout the resort is unsafe, as I can testify. Reports to staff members resulted in apologies but nothing else. A manager did tell me to call him if I choose to return next year. Fat chance of that. Please warn prospective guests who are seeking a safe and quiet visit at a Vermont Resort, to look elsewhere. We were very disappointed to choose this location to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Oh, and overlooking the dumpsters wasn’t the ‘country view’ we were looking for.
