Sercotel Gran Hotel Conde Duque is a traditional hotel in Chamberí, a charming neighbourhood just to the north of Madrid's centre. It is known for its quiet squares and restaurants -- don't miss the tapas bars on the Calle Ponzano.
Madrid is "perfect for a culture-rich long weekend or city break, with great food and a lively atmosphere at night", says The Daily Telegraph. The Museo del Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, "one of the most extraordinary private collections of predominantly European art in the world" (Lonely Planet), are around 25 minutes away by Metro, and Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the national museum of 20th-century art, is 30 minutes away.
The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Chamberí Station museum (open 10am-1pm Thursday; 11am-7pm Friday; 11am-3pm Saturday-Sunday). This abandoned station was on the city's first Metro line, and dates from around 1900. San Bernardo Metro station is five minutes' walk from the hotel.
A breakfast buffet is served from 7-11am (until 11:30am on weekends), and light meals are available from the lobby café. Afternoon tea is available in the wood-panelled tea room (5:30-7pm), and the hotel also has a gym. Standard rooms are spacious and offer free Wi-Fi.
