Overview

Good food, harbour views and a stylish finish draw guests to this waterside Cornish boutique hotel that, “radiates quiet luxury”, says The Guardian . Others agree -- Old Quay House was awarded Cornish Hotel of the Year by the Good Hotel Guide in 2013 and the restaurant is listed in The Michelin Guide .

Once a home for retired seamen, the 150-year old property has today been finished in earthy tones and natural fabrics, with big windows to make the most of those views. There are only 11 bedrooms but all are individually designed and have Egyptian cotton sheets with goose-down duvets, free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities and complimentary still and sparkling water. Many also have small balconies, overlooking the estuary – it is possible to lie in bed and watch the boats sail by.

The penthouse suite is something special, with floor to ceiling windows, plus an enormous bed atop polished wooden floorboards and a claw-footed bath.

Head chef Ben Bass trained under Raymond Blanc and has put together a menu for Q restaurant that showcases local Fowey River oysters and Cornish plaice, alongside West Country meat and Cornish cheeses. The terrace poking out over the Fowey estuary is a great spot for a glass of wine, picked by Britain’s youngest Master of Wine. Keep your eyes peeled for the occasional dolphin passing by.

Fowey itself offers plenty to do, whether trawling interiors boutiques off winding streets, eating fish and chips on a harbour wall or walking from the head of the estuary to St Catherine’s Castle. Condé Nast Traveller calls the town “stunningly picturesque”.
