Set in West Yorkshire's rugged South Pennines, this "delightful" (The AA) ivy-clad Jacobean manor retains many of its original features, including open fireplaces and stone mullioned windows. On the edge of the area known as Brontë country -- for its association with the famous literary sisters -- the 17th-century Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant is no stranger to celebrity guests, having previously hosted Jamie Oliver and The Beatles. It also featured in the BBC's "Last Tango in Halifax".

The hotel is on the outskirts of Halifax, in the Yorkshire countryside. It is around 45 minutes' drive from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Peak District National Park.

When at the hotel, keep an eye out for the stone Maltese cross above the central gable. This cross denotes that at one time the estate was in the hands of the ancient Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

The hotel's "elegent" candlelit and oak-panelled 2-AA-Rosette restaurant uses local produce -- The AA says "dinner provides the highlight of any stay". Long Bar offers non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, including local ales on tap and cocktails.

Rooms have Wi-Fi access and 24-hour room service.

Found the reception staff were not very welcoming as the same for the head waiter for dinner. The staff lack any warmth and weren't friendly at all, whilst I can't fault their professionalism. Whereas Audrey and the other ladies who serves breakfast were an absolute credit to the hotel. True good kind hearted Yorkshire ladies who were so kind to our daughters and went out of their way to help. My husband and I were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary which I had informed the hotel, but unfortunately last minute we had to bring our daughters along as my mum could not look after them due to major surgery. In spite of this the hotel still charges us full price of £150 doe the suite room to accommodate us all and didn't even wish us happy anniversary. This was disappointing as we spent over £380

Unable to make a reservation for the dining room until 8.30 which is too late for us to eat. Reception suggested we eat in the bar but you couldn't reserve a table. Went through at 7pm but all that was left was a sofa and coffee table. Another Travelzoo couple offered us their bar table as they had been phoned by the hotel to make a dinner reservation and were shortly to go into the dining room. The menu we were given turned out to be the bar menu and as such was limited. We ordered dessert but the waitress came back and said one was unavailable, 10 mins later she came back and said the other was also unavailable. At breakfast next morning our hot ham and eggs was delivered to the table whilst we still eating our cereal, making us feel that they were rushing us as they had a wedding on that morning. Complained at checkout and were told that it would be brought to the attention of the duty manager. Still waiting for a phone call.

Liked that the hotel called a few days ahead of our stay to check what time we'd like dinner as they were getting busy.
