"This is simply a beautiful hotel. Our room was classic and lovely. The only downside was that the windows looked out into the middle of the hotel. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Room service was excellent - wonderful coffee and an amazing, huge cinnamon roll."

Since opening its doors in 1872, The Tremont House has witnessed history unfold within its walls. Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, gave his last speech here; Confederate and Union soldiers slept in the rooms; and hurricane victims found a dry haven within during the Great Storm.

Today, the luxury hotel charms guests with period reproduction furnishings, high ceilings and hardwood floors in the rooms and suites. Contemporary amenities like free Wi-Fi, HD TVs, iPod docking stations and coffeemakers with Wolfgang Puck coffee keep modern-day visitors comfortable. Kids under 17 stay free in the same room as an adult.

The property features a casual café open for three meals a day, as well as a mahogany bar in the palm-filled, four-story atrium. The Rooftop Bar is the only open-air rooftop venue in Galveston and is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun set into the harbor. The property features a fitness room, and guests have access to the pool at the Hotel Galvez and Spa, Tremont’s sister hotel.

The Tremont House is located within walking distance of the Strands’ attractions, including the Grand 1894 Opera House, Galveston Island Railroad Museum and Pier 21 Theater. The hotel’s fourth floor is also the last stop on the year-round Ghosts of Galveston Tour, as it's allegedly haunted by a Victorian-era ghost.

From the press:
  • "Modernized decor meshes well with the building's original Edwardian architecture" -- U.S. News & World Report Travel
  • "The rooftop terrace gives views of the harbor and town" -- Travel + Leisure
  • "The closest full-service lodging to the port, just a short walk from shopping on the Strand" -- Fodor’s

The rooftop bar was a disappointment - we had a special function planned and they wouldn't take reservations for seating. The service at the rooftop bar was second rate and the drinks were expensive and weak.

Trouble with reservations at the front desk - they didn't recognize my Travel Zoo reservation. This is my second difficulty with travel zoo during check-in; the last time it was at a north Houston resort. I don't know if the problem lies with the hotels or with travel zoo?

From our initial contact with the valet to our final check out everything was wonderful. Our room was large and pleasant and very clean. We ate in the café and drank in the bar. The hotel courtesy car even took us to dinner one night so that we could have a bottle of wine! Super experience!

The staff is the friendliest group we ever encountered. The Valet staff, the cleaning crew, the desk attendants, etc. all went over and above.
