"Hello, I'm filling in this survey on behalf of my son, his wife and 4 month old little boy. I bought this 'breakaway' for them as an early Xmas present. As the chef couldn't make it to the hotel - due to the horrific weather in Cumbria, the whole day of Wednesday 22nd November - the staff kindly brought them a free bottle of wine, cutlery, plates and glasses to their cottage style room, separated from the main hotel; as a meal replacement. My son ordered in a Chinese takeaway from the town and they thoroughly enjoyed being pampered by the hotel team."

Overview

The Burn How Garden House Hotel is a boutique Victorian house with cottages a short stroll from Lake Windermere and a 5-minute walk from the village of Bowness-on-Windermere, where you'll find "trinket shops, cafés, ice-cream stalls and lakeside seats" (Rough Guides).

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, where you can learn about the author's life and meet some of her favourite characters, including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck, is a 5-minute walk away.

Bowness Bay -- the starting point for several lake cruises -- and Bowness Bay Marina Windermere Boat Hire is less than a 10-minute walk away.

Sizergh Castle and Garden, a National Trust stately home and garden in Helsington, is a 20-minute drive away. On Sunday, 10 April there's a daffodil walk from Sizergh Castle to Brigsteer Park, known locally as Brigsteer Wood.

The hotel's Burn How Restaurant serves local produce, including Morecambe Bay potted shrimps, Grizedale Forest venison, Lune Valley lamb and locally caught trout.

There are 28 bedrooms in total. The ground-floor Rose Garden Rooms are behind the main reception building and have a patio leading out on to the rose garden terrace. Lodge Rooms are over three floors in a detached Victorian residence, opposite the main reception building.

As I didn't stay, I can only tell you that as it was a gift break and I was worried that the weather would 'dampen' their treat, I emailed the hotel yesterday 23rd November; thanking them for making their stay special. The hotel Manager replied stating that they were happy to oblige and we'd be welcome to stay in the future. The hotel is ideally situated in Bowness as it's very near Windermere and the cruises. It's also in a quiet location but not far from a wide range of eateries and all the tourist shops and Beatrix Potter exhibitions. Many, many Japanese and other far eastern people make a pilgrimage to discover where Beatrix wrote her childrens' books as these are used to help Asian schoolchildren to learn the English language at a young age.
