Why We Love This Hotel
- Brilliant for transport: next to train, bus & tram stops
- Within walking distance of Basel’s top attractions -- including Switzerland’s biggest Christmas markets
- Rooms are large for Europe & have free high-speed Wi-Fi
The Swiss have a reputation for efficiency, and it’s hard to think of a more efficient way to see Basel -- Switzerland’s third largest city, with one of Europe’s best-preserved old towns -- than from this well placed hotel.
Set right opposite the main train station, Hotel Victoria is also just across the road from tram and bus stops -- which visitors can ride on for free. Most start their explorations of Basel in the nearby cobbled streets of the old town, particularly during winter when the country's biggest Christmas markets line the streets. At other times of the year, explore the City Market in the Marktplatz, selling local delicacies, flowers, tea and more.
Back at the hotel, the bedrooms are big by European standards and simply furnished, with free high-speed Wi-Fi -- go for one at overlooking the interior courtyard (away from the tram stop) to ensure a quiet night. Upgrade to a Junior Suite for more space, large windows overlooking the city and upmarket touches such as chaise longues.
The on-site Le Train Bleu restaurant serves food daily until midnight, with traditional and regional Swiss dishes on the menu and an extensive salad bar. In the summer, there’s a pretty terrace for dining al freso.
