Just off Chicago's famous Magnificent Mile, The Gwen (formerly the Conrad Hotel) is a AAA 4-Diamond bastion of elegant design suited to its upscale surroundings. Located in a landmark skyscraper built in 1929, The Gwen is Chicago's first Luxury Collection property and reflects the style of its namesake, artist and sculptor Gwen Lux.

Guestrooms are tailored to individual preference including a "sleep menu" with a choice of seven different kinds of pillows featuring relaxing aromatherapy scents or full-body options. Bathrooms feature marble touches, oversized showers and deep soaking tubs; basic Wi-Fi is free in all rooms with upgraded speeds available for a fee. The gym at this hotel has a host of extras, including complimentary earbuds, fresh fruit, chilled towels and, of course, state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

Beyond the hotel, guests can explore the ritzy neighborhood's shopping and dining -- the hotel is connected to the Shops at North Bridge Mall and is steps from the Mag Mile's Nordstrom's outlet and the Italian dining superstore Eataly. In fact, the hotel can actually arrange to have items from the Shops at North Bridge brought into the hotel for you to try on, turning your hotel room into your fitting room.

Note that the Gwen is undergoing some renovations to update the 5th-floor bar and restaurant, but floors that are being updated on have been completely closed off and guests are unlikely to be impacted. Visitors staying through April receive complimentary breakfast on the 10th floor while work is ongoing.

Customer service, miscommunications, double room not ready- pushed us into a king, never called about a double being ready like promised, promised a cot- never came, asked again- was told you can't have one. Spoke with manager she said she set aside another room for us next night (hand written note) called down no one knew what I was talking about and then was told sorry were sold out and not moving you... Got the ring around big time and it was embarassing how many times I had to re tell my story to each staff member.

I can't pick one particular item so I'll list all of the pros: location was fantastic, parking just across the street, extremely friendly staff, very comfortable beds, great bathroom layout for two or more people (toilet area separate), wonderful fitness room with chilled towels to cool you down during your workout and a full continental breakfast with beautiful fresh fruit. My cons were the pancakes were ice cold the morning we enjoyed breakfast and the day we were to check out room service came knocking three different times until I finally put in a call to say we were checking out at noon.

One bellman was very courteous and greeted us kindly. The other hotel staff ignored us other than during check-in.
Other Comments
The room amenities, particularly the bathroom design (water from the shower everywhere!) and lackluster, dated furniture. The staff was also nonexistent. Housekeeping brought us slippers when requested but left a piece of trash on the bed! The gentleman my husband spoke with when dialing 0 to notify we were vacating the room on time (we had requested a one hour later check out) was incredibly rude. I tried to temper the experience with the fact we got a decent deal through TV but was all around completely underwhelmed. Too many other incredible options off the Mag Mile to return.
