Overview
Although it may not have the cache of its glitzier main Strip peers, the 4-star South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa is one of Vegas’ hidden gems.
The 24-hour casino has all the Sin City staples like slots, video poker and table games with plenty of lower price points for those who may not be high-rollers. Other standard Vegas hotel features like the club and sports book also measure up to the competition -- you can bet on anything from sports to ponies to presidential nominations. Big name acts like Tony Orlando and comedienne Roseanne Barr have performed here.
Those who eschew gambling can find fun at the bowling center, a 64-lane venue complete with an arcade, snack bar and, this being Las Vegas, a separate area for slot machines. Still, there’s more -- a 16-screen multiplex, a full-service spa, a huge lagoon-style outdoor pool and a mix of fine dining and fast casual eateries. Grab a seat at long-time local favorite Michael’s Gourmet Room, an upscale old-school restaurant that received high marks from Zagat’s for its "absolutely superb" continental cuisine.
One of the resort’s most unique features is the equestrian center, where horse enthusiasts can come to compete, watch and cheer. Bull-riding and roping contests are held in the arena that’s billed as “Where Cowboys Come to Play.”
If you’re not a lover of livestock, it’s best to plan your stay here during a time when there are no four-legged visitors as some say the smell of cattle is not easily masked.
Typical Vegas visitors spend minimal time in their rooms, but it’s nice to know that the rooms are spacious with a casual country-influenced design. While not trendy or contemporary, they are tastefully decorated in yellow and gold with traditional furnishings in a mix of blond and dark woods. At over 500-square-feet, there’s plenty of room for an easy chair and a separate table with chairs.
