Situated in a quiet corner of the historic Vieux-Port neighbourhood, the Hotel Port Royal is still close to the action of Old Quebec. It's within a five-minute walk of Notre-Dame de Quebec Basillica-Cathedral and just two blocks from the Museum of Civilization. Chateau Frontenac is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, while the Plains of Abraham in Battlefields Park is a 20-minute drive.

The property’s architecture dates back to the 1860s but the interiors include modern conveniences and decor where trendy furnishings are set against exposed brick walls. The hotel has only forty rooms, all outfitted with kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen televisions. Upgraded suites have full kitchens and lounge areas separated by French doors.

The large outdoor terrace of Le Pub du Vieux-Port serves up a wide selection of cocktails, shooters and wine to go along with the menu of pub fare. For a more elevated dining experience, guests of the hotel can indulge at Le Quai 19, which focuses on Quebec-centric flavours.

We got a special price through Travel Zoo. The hotel’s location for walking around the upper and lower parts of Old Quebec City was perfect . We were with another couple and parked our car and never used it until it was time to leave 4 days later. The on-site restaurant Louise bar and tavern breakfast was very good, so was the dinner we had. Staff in hotel and restaurant very friendly and helpful. We stayed last week of November and we were lucky the weather was in the 30’s so it wasn’t to bad walking around if dressed properly.

We were actually upgraded to a luxury suite at check-in time. It was a beautiful, modern, well-equipped, clean room.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars for location, was because it was a bit of a walk to get to any of the shops and activities around Vieux Quebec, mostly uphill. This wasn't an issue for me because I'm a hiker, but it was for my wife. The only reason I didn't give Ambience/Atmosphere a 5-star rating was because though the room was beautiful, the outside noises were quite audible (we never opened the windows). There had been a snow storm the day of our arrival, so the sound of the trucks clearing the streets of snow was underway during the hours after midnight. Then, there were the sounds of deliveries being made to the hotel around 6 am, just below our corner room. The front desk staff were very pleasant to deal with. Despite the two inconveniences mentioned above, overall, we had a great stay and would stay there again in the future.
