For many people the seaside resort city of Coronado is synonymous with the Hotel del Coronado. The massive Victorian building was built in 1888 and has hosted notable guests including U.S. presidents, Hollywood heavyweights and other celebrated figures.
Although the property has grown over the years to include two towers and several luxe beach cottages, it’s the original red gabled building that remains a California coastal icon. Stroll the same grounds where Marilyn Monroe filmed "Some Like It Hot," and enjoy a lavish brunch in the upscale Crown Room where former President Richard Nixon hosted a state dinner in 1970 that counted Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and former President Lyndon Johnson among its notable guests.
The original rooms in the Victorian house have been updated over the years to reflect modern times, all are furnished in muted earth tones and classic casual furnishings to keep the focus on the ocean views outside. All come with a modern marble bathroom and Keurig coffeemaker.
Some past TripAdvisor guests say that the rooms in the main building are a bit small for an upscale property, but if you appreciate historic architecture, than it’s still a better choice then the newer rooms which lack the history of the original.
Like any good resort, the “Del” is chock-full of fantastic amenities ranging from a luxurious salon and day spa to a kids club and ocean water sports. Try a teacher-led beachside painting class, that includes wine and classical music, or arrange for a private bonfire, and make your own gourmet s’mores with the family.
The nightly resort fee is a bit steep ($28 per night plus tax) but includes Wi-Fi access, in-room bottled water, access to the fitness center, fitness classes, discounted tennis club access and discounted tickets to the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, Legoland, Safari Park, The Old Town Trolley and Disneyland.
