Overview

The Salamander Resort & Spa is under 50 miles from Washington, D.C., but "with its acres of rolling fields and relaxed atmosphere, it feels like it's worlds away" (U.S. News). Offering 168 luxurious rooms on 340 acres of Virginia countryside, the Salamander is one of the South's 10 Best Resorts (Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice 2017).

Each of the Salamander's rooms features lofty 10-foot ceilings, a soaking tub, marble shower and a balcony or patio; many have working fireplaces as well. Guests can take in views of the Grand Lawn or the rolling acres. Wi-Fi and self-parking are complimentary, and access to the fitness center, sauna and indoor/outdoor pool is also included.

True farm-to-table dining is available Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill, with many ingredients sourced from the chef's garden outside the restaurant. The restaurant may offer the best view in the house, with panoramas of the countryside and the Bull Run Mountains in the distance. There's also a variety of Virginia wines on hand at the Gold Cup wine bar.

Guests can also arrange horseback riding excursions on the same lands that Jackie Kennedy once rode or soar through the treetops on a zip-line tour. In nearby Middleburg, guests can visit polo fields and Civil War battlefields, go antiquing or sample vintages at nearby wineries.

It's not a truly relaxing visit to the Salamander without a trip to the 23,000-square-foot spa with 14 treatment rooms on hand, including rooms with outdoor terraces for sunlit massages and a couples spa suite. Treatments include massages, facials, body wraps and salon services. Afterward, relax at the infinity-edge pool, waterfall, steam room and whirlpool.

I love the ambience and atmosphere of the Salamanader. The drive to the resort thru the mountains put you in a relaxed mode. The rooms are spacious and the views are great. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

There was no issues with booking the hotel room. However much improvement can/should be made when making spa reservations. I had to call 3 days before I got a call back and/or spoke to a live person. The recording just kept automatically recycling...not very good for business or first timers. I waited patiently but others may just give up and if they do you're losing business and they are missing out on a great experience. Just food for thought!

Book your Spa BEFORE booking the room. Spa was unavailable for dates booked, but still enjoyed our stay.

The rooms and ambiance was great. Felt very regal and high end and a great location for a getaway close to DC.

We decided to use the spa and we’re charged extra for nearly everything, despite not being informed. We both received a manicure and were charged $10 just to remove our currently nail polish and also had a $20 upcharge for using gel. Neither of us were informed of these charges until checkout. Following the manicure, our nails were rushed and done poorly. We ran into trouble when trying to use other spa amenities and were told about many “free” things to do around the hotel, however upon arrival found out there were fees involved. For a room costing almost $500, I don’t expect to get nickel and dimed for everything else during our stay.

Surprised the beds were not high end and comfortable. The menu in the gold cup bar is limited and very heavy selections. Same with lunch and dinner menu for room service.
