Post World War II, the city of Berlin was split between the East and West, and this building had a key part to play as the headquarters of the Stasi (East Germany’s secret police). Today, it is the modern Hotel Gat Point Charlie, which is a stone’s through from Checkpoint Charlie – an ideal location for exploring all Berlin has to offer.
It’s an easy walk to Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz and the Trabi Museum, plus Kochstrasse U-Bahn station is only a few minutes’ walk to link to attractions further afield. It’s also possible to hire bikes for a day from the hotel.
On-site, there’s a good atmosphere in the bar and the Avan restaurant serves well priced Vietnamese fare. Expect dishes such as spicy grilled duck breast in a sweet and sour sauce, Vietnamese summer rolls and Loatian curry with chicken breast and coconut milk. In the morning, a varied buffet breakfast is served with hot options, cereal, yoghurt, meat, cheese, bread and pastries.
The rooms are minimalist and quiet, with blackout curtains, free Wi-Fi and powerful showers. Upgrade to a Junior Suite for more space, complimentary water and juice in the mini bar, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
