Overview

Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton is a grand old seaside hotel with well-tended gardens and impressive views of the coastline and the Isle of Wight. The hotel is on East Cliff, a 5-minute walk along a zigzag path from Bournemouth's 7-mile-long beach.

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk along the waterfront from Bournemouth Pier and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, where you can see humboldt penguins, green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks, among other species. Bournemouth's railway station and high-street shops are 15 minutes' walk away.

The New Forest is 20 minutes' drive away. This 220-square-mile national park is home to ponies and deer, and has many walking, cycle and nature trails to explore. We recommend the deer-viewing platform at Bolderwood, around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel; three circular walks start at the car park and visitor centre there.

Frederick's, the hotel's restaurant, serves traditional British dishes in an impressive high-ceilinged dining room with sea views. There's also a lounge for light bites and afternoon tea, and a club-style bar. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a gym.

Rooms are spacious and have traditional décor. Feature/View Rooms have sea views. Wi-Fi is free.

We spent our wedding anniversary here and although we enjoyed ourselves & the room was nice size but a little tired... Sadly the service was very slow & a few times we were forgotten & had to give staff reminders.. But apart from that our stay was nice

The bar closes at 11pm !! and we were asked to move out into the lounge area, even though the night porter will serve drinks to the residents. Very fawlty towers way of operating we thought.

The starters and the desert but not the main course which was a very mediocre beef stew.
Other Comments
Needs a make over which seems long overdue. The shower facilities were in a sorry state with our first room suffering with no shower flow and the second room with a shower tap which could not be turned off.

Very convenient location. Spacious. Excellent 6' bed. Sea view.
Other Comments
Staff friendly but not enough serving staff at supper or in the bar. Thus we waited for a long time to be seated and a gin and tonic took over 10 minutes to appear as the bar girl was busy managing drinks for the restaurant at the same time. When it did appear it was excellent. Bathroom poorly designed. Nowhere to hang towels within reach of either bath or basin. no shelf space for toothbrush etc. The usual hotel design problem no sockets near the beds. Why?! Windows draughty and place cold when there was a strong wind off the sea. Receptionist very helpful and soon got us additional heater. Dinner very mediocre though breakfast OK.
