The Grade II-listed BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel is set in a 73-acre deer park, and a herd of deer often grazes in the paddock in front of the building. There's also a lake and manicured gardens. The building sits on the site of the former home of local legend Robert Shafto, an 18th-century MP about whom the folk song "Bobby Shafto's Gone to Sea" is said to have been written.
The hotel is a great base from which to explore the local area. Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace, is a 10-minute drive away, and dates back to the 12th-century. Durham Cathedral and Castle are less than a 20-minute drive away and Bowes museum, with a nationally renowned art collection, is less than 40 minutes away. The heart of the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with heather moors, meadows and woods is less than an hour away.
The Library Restaurant is set in the oldest part of the house and serves classic British dishes. There's also a Lounge Bar. For keen anglers, fishing is available onsite and the 18-hole Brancepeth Golf Club is two miles away.
