Located among the grand mansions of Embassy Row in a Beaux Arts building that dates back to 1927, the Fairfax has hosted numerous presidents and dignitaries. It was even the childhood home of vice president Al Gore while his father was a Tennessee senator. Today, the hotel offers "elegant, up-to-date rooms and top-tier service" ( that's far enough from the Mall to be calm, but still just minutes away from most major attractions.

The 250-square-foot Superior rooms and 328-square-foot Grand Deluxe rooms "receive a classic English-countryside treatment" (Forbes); both feature king or two double beds with pillowtop mattresses and 300-thread-count Italian linens. Bathrooms have marble floors and counters, plush robes and Gilchrist & Soams bath products; a single-serve coffeemaker will help wake you up in the morning.

While the Fairfax is close to many Dupont Circle-area restaurants, the hotel is also home to The Capitol Room, once known as The Jockey Club. Throughout the 20th century, the Club was visited by the likes of JFK and Jackie, Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando; today it serves up American cuisine and a breakfast buffet daily. At the Fairfax Grille & Lounge, guests can have a cocktail or a beer in the same room Hillary Clinton launched her 2008 presidential campaign.

With just a block between guests and the Dupont Circle Metro stop, it's easy to hop onto the Red Line and quickly get to the White House, the Mall or the Smithsonian; the Capitol Building is the most distant attraction at just under a half-hour away. It's also a 20-minute walk to the many top-rated Logan Circle restaurants and bars that run up 14th Street NW.

While the hotel is historic and could be beautiful, the rooms are not maintained. The carpeting isn't vacuumed nor the floors mopped regularly. the furniture is in poor shape and the bathrooms very outdated and dirty. The drains in both rooms (first room was horrible) smelled terribly and the AC barely cooled the room. I expected much more. Management changed me to a room with a better view, however overall the experience was very disappointing. There is a $25 per day fee, but other than wi-fi and two small bottles of water, nothing else is available. The bar was not open once while I was there, a latte was $6, banana was $2 and the breakfast buffet was $25.

Avoid getting a room that can be an a joining room as the sound travels as if it were open. The main sleeping area was comfortable and nice. The bathroom was large but had no counter space other than about 12” around the sides of the sink. That was disappointing but not a deal breaker to not stay again. Next time I’ll ask for a non a joining room and make sure the lavatory is usable.

Had to change rooms due to no privacy curtain in bathroom. Had to ask 3 times during day.
