Bailbrook House Hotel -- a Grade II-listed Georgian mansion built by architect John Eveleigh in the 1790s, is nestled in manicured gardens on the outskirts of Bath. The property boasts country and city vistas, a laid-back atmosphere and a honey-stone façade.

The city centre, home to the Roman Baths, The Pump Room and the Royal Crescent, is a 15-minute taxi ride away. There is also a regular bus service into town (the bus stop is 500 metres from the hotel), or you can embark on the pleasant hour-long stroll along the Kennett and Avon Canal. Return to a traditional afternoon tea served on the terrace in fine weather or in one of the three Royal Lounges (supplements apply).

"The Cloisters Restaurant offers romantic, high-end dining, and staff are on the ball," according to The Daily Telegraph. The restaurant (open Wednesday-Sunday) holds two AA Rosettes and is in the manor house's vaulted cellars. The Conservatory Bar is a lovely spot for a snack or an after-dinner nightcap, and the Lansdown Restaurant serves a buffet breakfast.

Executive Rooms are in the modern annex adjacent to the mansion house. There is a small gym. Wi-Fi is free.

Very convenient for road travel, attractive property, spotlessly clean. And the staff we met were delightful and tried to be helpful.

We weren't given any information about reserving at table for dinner when booking in, nor that a table had been reserved for us at 8.30pm; if we had, I would have changed the time (eating late simply upsets my stomach!). We went into the restaurant early 7.15ish and were seated. After only a starter and main got out at 9.20pm! We would have preferred to eat casually in the bar/conservatory but even there the wait for food was long. We were told by the manager, waiting and bar staff that there was a problem with a shortage of staff in the kitchen. The waiting staff were very apologetic but sitting over 2 hours on a dining chair waiting for food is not how I expected to spend the evening. Food was ok, nothing exceptional, although the presentation was pretty. Breakfast was ok, but the same problems occurred, simply not enough staff on duty for the amount of guests. Personally, I couldn't get away fast enough.

1. No acknowledgement by the hotel nor the restaurant, despite both being notified separately, that this was a ruby wedding anniversary. 2. Had to re-pack and change rooms as the bath drainage was blocked and the plug was not functioning. That took an hour and two phone calls to reception. Dinner reservation had to be re-scheduled. 3. Service in the restaurant poor. Only 8 diners but service slow. 30 minute wait for dessert. Waiter described Cavolo Nero as "mixed vegetables" and then "vegetables of the day"! Amateurish. 4. On checkout was told what I owed. Not presented with an itemised bill until I requested it. They had stapled on to my bill £20 for two glasses of champagne which I had not had. There was no signature or room number so this hadn't been signed for. Why staple it to my bill??? No apology from reception. They had the temerity to add £7.00 service charge to my total bill, which I declined to pay.

Dinner in Cloisters Restaurant. Lovely walk along the canal into Bath (takes about 1 hour) and the room had everything needed and very well appointed.

The staff were so superb. So often we have been to hotels where the staff can’t really be bothered, but not at the Bailbrook Hotel! They were absolutely so pleasant and couldn’t do enough for you. Well done to the Manager and his staff - keep it up guys if makes all the difference. The hotel itself was also extremely well kept; out room was faultlessly clean and the bed was divine. If I had to pick a fault it would be the shower which was not very powerful. Our evening meal was delicious. Will definitely stay at this hotel again when visiting Bath next time.
