Why We Love It

  • Built in 1928 and completely renovated in 2015, this historic building has hosted John Steinbeck, Thomas Mann and F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • It's an easy walk to Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park and the Empire State Building
  • Each luxurious room features unique design elements, plus complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Suites look and feel like private apartments, with plush furniture and original hardwood flooring

The Renwick hotel in Midtown East offers high-end amenities in a historic setting. Designed by St. Patrick's Cathedral architect John Renwick in 1928, the original building housed artists' studios and apartments that hosted John Steinbeck, Thomas Mann and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Now, the hotel calls up that literary history with artist-inspired accommodations featuring easels, origami kits, hand-painted window dressings and stools, and quotes from its famous former residents.

Residential-style suites look and feel like private apartments, with original hardwood flooring and plush velvet couches in the separate living area. In-room amenities include Brooklyn-based Apotheke toiletries, complimentary bottled water and legendary novels to read. All guests can take advantage of a business center, complimentary Wi-Fi, and passes to a local NYC gym.

The on-site restaurant Bedford & Co features elevated comfort food such as chicken pot pie and truffle mac and cheese.

Stepping outside the hotel's door on East 40th Street, guests feel more like locals, with neighborhood diners and coffee shops lining Lexington Avenue.   Grand Central Terminal (including the 4, 5, 6, 7 and Shuttle trains) is just a three-minute walk and the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue is five minutes by foot. The Empire State Building is a 10-minute stroll away.

We had a suite that included a pull out bed that we used. However, we did not have adequate bedding for the bed for 3 of 5 nights. Specifically, with a bed on a window in NYC with not a day above freezing we did not have blankets. The hotel staff only provided sheets. We also requested extra pillows everyday and never received them and in 2 of the 3 rooms we were in ran out of shampoo. We took a shower late at night and did not have shampoo for our hair. The hotel has big bottles of shampoo mounted to the wall which means that cleaning staff are not filling it on a regular basis. Regarding the blankets, we sent our young nephew to get the blankets from the front desk when he returned he was so upset and became very angry. This caused a fight within our family because some were trying to get him calmed down and others were arguing that he had a right to be angry. This kinda ruined a part of our trip. The hotel staff at the front desk were very apologetic and did give us breakfast coupons. However, the service of a hotel should include blankets during the winter and when not provided should warrant more of an apology than breakfast coupons.

Room's cleanliness was hit and miss. The night we checked in, there were leaves at the corner of the room. The next day, the leaves were gone, but a bath towel had several black marks on it, folded inside. I only saw them after opening it up after shower. Bathroom sink was small and had no edge. When we brushed teeth or washed face, water would splatter onto the floor.
