The Renwick hotel in Midtown East offers high-end amenities in a historic setting. Designed by St. Patrick's Cathedral architect John Renwick in 1928, the original building housed artists' studios and apartments that hosted John Steinbeck, Thomas Mann and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Now, the hotel calls up that literary history with artist-inspired accommodations featuring easels, origami kits, hand-painted window dressings and stools, and quotes from its famous former residents.

Residential-style suites look and feel like private apartments, with original hardwood flooring and plush velvet couches in the separate living area. In-room amenities include Brooklyn-based Apotheke toiletries, complimentary bottled water and legendary novels to read. All guests can take advantage of a business center, complimentary Wi-Fi, and passes to a local NYC gym.

The on-site restaurant Bedford & Co features elevated comfort food such as chicken pot pie and truffle mac and cheese.

Stepping outside the hotel's door on East 40th Street, guests feel more like locals, with neighborhood diners and coffee shops lining Lexington Avenue.   Grand Central Terminal (including the 4, 5, 6, 7 and Shuttle trains) is just a three-minute walk and the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue is five minutes by foot. The Empire State Building is a 10-minute stroll away.

This is a very nice hotel--very clean, nice and helpful staff, great location, and a wonderful history. It was once a writers and artist loft.

Love the decor and theme. Great comfy bed. Liked the location. Rooms were nicely set up. We had a beautiful view! We loved having a fridge in our room. We appreciated being able to store our luggage at the hotel after checkout since our flight was later in the evening.

Make sure cleaning staff leaves at least 2 washcloths, hand towels and towels. We were short a couple of days.

The 1st morning, being under the shower and discovering that there was no shampoo and shower gel in the bottles. Only one wash cloth for 2 persons. I removed bottles from the rack and posted them in evidence for them to be refiled. The next morning, the shower gel bottle was still empty (the little bar soap had not been renewed) and the same wash cloth was at the same place I left it the morning before, not renewed. Add to that for 2 days, the same little bottle of body lotion (not renewed) for 2 persons.

Be sure to ask for one of their larger bedrooms and one with a view. We went with another couple and our room was tiny and theirs was quite spacious, and we reserved the exact same room and paid the same price for very different rooms. Their room had a view of the Empire State Building, ours had a view of a brick wall. Also, our bathroom had a sink the size of one you would find in an RV, when we washed our hands or face, we had a puddle of water on the floor because the sink was so narrow, it was difficult to wash hands and keep them positioned over the sink. Our traveling friends had a nice size room and a normal bathroom with a normal sink size...so definitely ask for that when you arrive.
