Opened in 2012, the Ofelias Hotel charms sightseers and business travellers with its discreet air and tasteful style. It's slightly off the beaten track -- La Rambla and Montjuïc's parks and gardens are a good 30-minute walk, but Las Arenas shopping mall is just across the road, and the Magic Fountain is only 10 minutes by foot. Make sure you pop by for the show -- it's illuminated every half hour from 9-11pm (Thursday-Sunday from May-September) and from 7-8:30pm (Friday-Saturday from October-April).
The property is a block from the Plaza Espagna, providing easy access to the airport and the city centre, and there's also a Metro station on the corner, so it's easy to get around. Guests can borrow a bike from reception for free, but you’ll need to reserve one as they’re very popular.
The rooftop pool is the real draw. It's not big enough for laps, but is perfect for a cool dip after a day's sightseeing. The surrounding deck is furnished with cushioned rattan loungers that are large enough for two, and you can get drinks delivered via the on-site phone.
Guests can also hang out in the lobby downstairs, which is fashionably dotted with an eclectic mix of vintage knick-knacks, and although there's no bar or restaurant as such, drinks are available from reception. A continental breakfast is served daily until 11am.
Calm rooms are well insulated against the street noise, although guests can request a courtyard-facing room to ensure a quiet night. Glass-enclosed bathrooms are luxurious, with double sinks in the marble-topped counters and a walk-in shower, and there are slatted shutters for privacy. Junior Suites have cosy window seats and a few rooms have pretty private terraces. There's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, but the signal is best by the pool and reception.
