Why We Love This Hotel

  • The AA calls Langley a "magnificent 14th-century fortified castle" with "stylish" bedrooms
  • It has a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, a drawing room and a cosy bar -- you may even spot the odd peacock in the castle grounds
  • The Daily Telegraph describes the hotel as "the real deal: a 14th-century castle - all battlements and seven-foot thick walls", while the Manchester Evening News says it has an "abundance of historical intrigue and romance"
  • The hotel sits on a scenic road over the North Pennines, around 10 minutes' drive from the pretty market town of Hexham

"All good bar the bathroom. Plastic shower curtain that was too small in a 4 star hotel is pushing it. Sink tap assembly was loose and the general view was that they were not bothering to invest in modern fitments."

Looking like something out of a fairy tale, Langley Castle is a true medieval fortress, complete with castellated turrets, stained glass and resident peacocks. The property was built in 1350 and, after years of neglect, was sympathetically restored in the 19th century by a local historian and his wife. Now Grade I-listed, it is "England's only medieval fortified castle to welcome paying guests" (Frommer's) and makes for a truly unique stay.

The Deluxe Castle Rooms in the main building are something special, with 7-foot walls, 4-poster beds and a spa bath or private sauna in the bathrooms. Standard rooms aren't located in the castle itself, but do overlook it and are furnished in Baronial style, with canopy beds and plenty of drapes. Castle View Suites in the coach house are perfect for families, and have curtains to divide the bed from the living space and a separate sofa bed for the kids. Dogs are welcome in selected rooms for £20 per night (please enquire on booking).

In the mornings, the continental buffet is supplemented by cooked-to-order hot dishes, such as a full Scottish breakfast or eggs Benedict. After breakfast, you can join the daily 10:15am battlement tour.

Sycamore Gap (often referred to as Robin Hood's Tree) and Housesteads Roman Fort, an English Heritage site on Hadrian's Wall, are less than 20 minutes' drive away. For more modern culture, drive 40 minutes east to Newcastle, "the hipster capital of the northeast" (Lonely Planet).

Come nightfall, the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant turns to fine dining, with a regularly changing 5-course set menu that The AA describes as "thrilling". Afternooon tea is served daily from 2-5:30pm, and scones, jam and cream are available at any time.

The hotel won the award for North East Hotel of the Year 2018 at the North East Tourism Awards, and it seems Travelzoo members agree -- 99% of members who reviewed their stay loved it, praising the "glorious setting", "amazing food", "excellent service" and "brilliant castle tour".

We went as a group to celebrate a birthday, and the castle dedicated one of their restaurants to the party which was brilliant, and appreciated; plus catered for us with a birthday cake, and add ons and flexibility to the menu. The tour was amazing and being able to stay inside the castle was wonderful. The whole experience made it a very memorable and valued experience - absolutely brilliant!

Lovely Castle View room. Well thought out and nice decoré.

The meal was overpriced and the service was poor. I did consider having the automatic service charge on the bill for the meal removed but as it was around Christmas time I left it on as a good will gesture. I do think the service charge should be at the guests discretion.

We chose to stay in a castle room so that we did not have to cross the car park to the restaurant. Castle rooms are very good and full of character but do suffer from restrictions due to the structure of the building: small windows, a step in the bathroom. Access to some of the bedrooms is by a very steep circular staircase; some people may struggle with these stairs.

Our room was very dusty above the bed and around the plug sockets. Several bulbs were not working in the bathroom and main room. There was also a missing part to the tap. Thought service charge for meals was cheeky given there was just two of us. Drinks were also expensive.

A genuine castle converted to a luxury hotel with historical connections, wonderful art and great comfort - and a super qualitative chef who presents excellent food for dinner and breakfast. A great experience for us!
