"Everything about the hotel and staff was absolutely charming. Good restaurant. Wonderful views from the bedrooms at the front. A bath in the room was a bit too quirky for me, though it's a trademark here. I could have spent longer sitting in a chair looking out the window. All in all? Lovely."

Intimate and effortlessly chic, drakes has been gathering a loyal following since it opened in 2005. The property occupies two Georgian townhouses on the Kemp Town waterfront, ensuring excellent sea views and easy access to Brighton's main attractions. This boutique bolthole is made for a romantic getaway, with luxurious bath tubs in all but one of the 20 rooms, and has hosted Cate Blanchett, Kylie Minogue and Woody Allen in the past.

The hotel is five minutes on foot to the pier, and the Lanes and the Royal Pavilion are a 10-minute walk away. This is a small boutique property so don’t expect a gym or a spa on site, although guests can purchase day passes to a local fitness centre (ask at reception) and staff can organise bespoke couples' massages at The Treatment Rooms, with advance notice. In the morning, you can have breakfast in the restaurant or delivered to your room at no extra charge.

With 20 Michelin-recommended restaurants, the city is known for its fine dining, but the restaurant here is "Brighton's best", according to Lonely Planet. Portions are plentiful -- expect classics such as pan-roasted duck breast with savoy cabbage and cassis sauce. Drinks are available at the lounge bar around the clock, where the cocktails are excellent.

Stylish rooms are a little small with limited storage, but packed full of luxury touches, including full-size toiletries, air conditioning (hot and cold), and neat wet rooms, hidden behind frosted-glass doors. You'll find the best views in those rooms with free-standing baths in front of big bay windows overlooking the sea, but they can be a little noisy -- it's hard to soundproof the heritage sash windows. Sea-facing attic rooms on the fourth floor have sloping ceilings, but offer good value for money thanks to private rooftop balconies. There's no lift, so request a room on one of the lower floors if this is an issue.

The room was on the third floor, no lift, no consideration for one of the customers with a heart condition. Refused to reallocate. The view was of four large kitchen extractor fans which were left on. It was only at 0300 and after numetous requests that they were silenced only to be restarted at 0530. The air conditioning in the room was not working and a portable unit had been left in the room venting out of the window, this had to be closed due to the noise from the fans. It was 27 degrees in the room that night. The room was miniscule with a tatty curtain acting as a wardrobe door

Lovely hotel, well located for all that Brighton gas to offer. The staff were all very friendly and happy to help ensure your "Brighton experience" was the best it could be.

Be advised that if you have a room on the 3rd floor there is no lift. Bot a major problem, but should be a consideration.

My mistake I did not ring to request a room at the top,and we were allocated a room on the first floor, no view,and with frosted windows.Bit disappointing but they were very sorry and we had a brandy on the house.
