The 4-star Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel & Spa is a "beautiful and secluded" (Liverpool Echo) traditional country house set in 27 acres of Cheshire woodland.

The property is 15 minutes' drive from the Roman walls and Tudor buildings of Chester -- "one of English history's greatest gifts to the contemporary visitor" (Lonely Planet). Liverpool, where you can explore the famous Albert Dock -- home to The Beatles Story exhibition and Tate Liverpool art gallery -- is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. The many shops, bars and restaurants of Manchester city centre are less than an hour's drive away.

The AA-Rosette-awarded Craxton Wood Grill restaurant serves "imaginative dishes" using "quality produce", says The AA Restaurant Guide 2017. There is also a cocktail lounge with an outdoor terrace that is open in fine weather.

The "wonderful" (Manchester Evening News) Vital Health & Wellbeing Club and Spa, which underwent a £1.4 million renovation in 2014, features an indoor pool, a gym, relaxation and treatment rooms, and a coffee bar serving healthy snacks and refreshments. The extensive thermal suite includes a sauna, a steam room, two aromatic drench showers, two footbaths and an ice fountain.

We've also negotiated a Spa Day w/Massage & Facial for £49.

According to The AA Hotel Guide 2017, the hotel offers "a variety of spacious and comfortable rooms, well equipped with modern amenities". Executive Rooms are larger than Classic Rooms, and feature garden views, upgraded toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

The hotel needs a major upgrade. It's very dated and also the bar area is very tiny and not really somewhere you would want to spend time if you didn't fancy going out

The spa facilities were dissapointing. Sauna and Steam room was out of action on the pool side. When we went to the Thermal suite, the foot spa was not working properly, and the Ice experience also was not available. We had particularl;y booked this hotel for the spa facilities.

The food, although not included with the deal, was wonderful and the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Other Comments
The "spa" was just a pool, sauna and steam room. There wasn't the advertised Ice Fountain. There weren't even any water fountains to rehydrate. The room we stayed in was very dated.

The gentleman who did the tour of the spa was extremely helpful and friendly. Spa facilities really good and clean, shame the hotel and restaurant wasn't to the same standard.
Other Comments
The room was cold and throughout the hotel in general. At breakfast my partner and I were sat on a table which was for four people and had previously been used that morning. Cutlery was dirty, toast was cold and breakfast was definitely not the best, I left most of mine. We visited the spa as we arrived early. The spa receptionist was rude and asked me to send the booking confirmation to the hotel after she has already seen it on my phone, very embrassing, not sure why I had to email it to the hotel as she had already seen it on my phone, very strange. Her attitude put me off booking any treatments with the spa. Coffee and a hot chocolate £7.50 in the spa Cafe over priced. No jacuzzi and aqua aerobics on in the middle of the day, not very relaxing. The hotel room was very dated. Kettle would just about reach the socket, hair dryer broke and minimal milk for tea and coffee.
