On the upmarket Maximilianstrasse, surrounded by designer boutiques, the 5-star Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten is one of Munich's grand old dames with parts of the building dating back 140 years. The hotel won Germany's Leading Conference Hotel at the World Travel Awards in 2015, but don't let that put you off. This property is definitely for those who enjoy the finer things in life, whether you're travelling for business or pleasure.
It’s in an ideal location, 10 minutes' walk from Marienplatz Square (where there is an underground and S-Bahn station) and the Viktualienmarkt. Hofgarten park is also nearby, and the city's opera house, the Nationaltheater München, is five minutes on foot.
The hotel's façade is recognisably Bavarian and the interiors are traditional. The lobby is grand, with a high glass ceiling, and is a perfect place to people watch with a cup of coffee and a homemade macaron. Later on, the bar has a good atmosphere and an impressive cocktail and whisky collection -- it is not uncommon for a live band to perform.
The Schwarzreiter Tagesbar & Restaurant serves modern reimaginings of traditional Bavarian cuisine, such as Bavarian kimchi with pumpkin and miso; venison saddle and shoulder -- with veal liver sausage, Brussels sprouts and Bavarian pastries; and apple strudel with hazelnut and cassis sorbet. The breakfast buffet is pricey at 42€ per person but extensive -- expect pancakes, waffles, Bavarian omelet, a vast selection of bread, eggs, cold cuts and specialties from the area.
The bedrooms are elegant and comfortable, with DVD players, free Wi-Fi and iPads with which you can control the lighting and air conditioning, and order room service. All of the windows are double-glazed and either overlook the Maximilianstrasse or one of the inner courtyards. Upgrade to a Deluxe Two Bedroom Suite and receive complimentary airport transfers and free contents of the mini bar (refilled each day).
The spa is on the sixth floor and surrounds a large indoor pool with a glass roof and terrace overlooking the city. Work out in the well-equipped gym or relax with a massage or facial. There’s also a sauna and steam room, which are free for guests to use.
