Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Grade II-listed Regency townhouse has a "pretty unbeatable" (The Daily Telegraph) location -- it's a 5-minute walk from the city walls
  • There's a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant on site
  • York Minster -- one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world -- is 10 minutes' walk from the property

With an imposing façade, soaring staircases and Chesterfield armchairs, York's Grange Hotel is full of character and flourishes reminiscent of a bygone era. The Grade II-listed property dates back to 1829 and is only a 5-minute walk from the city walls, in a location that The Daily Telegraph says is "pretty unbeatable".

York Minster, the largest medieval cathedral in northern Europe, is 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. York's Chocolate Story is also around 10 minutes' walk away. Visitors can take a guided tour to discover the part chocolate has played in York's history. Other attractions such as the National Railway Museum, Clifford's Tower and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within a 20-minute walk.

Further afield, the impressive Castle Howard estate is a 35-minute drive, while the North York Moors National Park and the seaside town of Scarborough are just over an hour away.

The hotel's Ivy Brasserie has two AA Rosettes and offers "fine dining in a lavishly decorated environment" (The AA Hotel Guide 2019). The restaurant, which serves classic dishes with a French influence, is in the cellars of the hotel.

Beautiful hotel in a fabulous location close to the centre. The 3 course meal was delicious with a decent choice of wines. It is easy to see why the Ivy restaurant is highly rated. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble. The four poster room bedroom and accompanying bathroom were spotless. If I had a gripe then it would be about the lack of decent to channels however what hotel does provide cable channels as standard.? Parking should also be free.

The attached restaurant was very nice and in fact the waitress from there heard my conversation with reception when I first found the room. I said I had just wanted to come back to my room and rest my back ( as I’d recently had major back surgery) and have a cup of tea ( which I couldn’t as no supplies been given) and she, not reception, very kindly offered to bring up a tray of tea for me which while I declined offer as just wanted to rest, really appreciated the gesture.

Room not serviced on second day but someone had been in room and untucked the sheets so room was left in poor state. Very worried what had happened. Spoke to reception who said no one available to sort room but they would inform a manager. Had to ask for more tea and milk. Clean cups brought on request and old ones taken but had to go back down and request tea spoons and toiletries. Really worried about room safety overnight and spoke to receptionist in morning who said she’d speak to general manager. Unable to enjoy breakfast while worrying if our items were safe in room. Also noticed my fleece jacket was missing. General Manager checked door entry times and found a cleaner had gone in and left it in that state. The cleaner had taken my jacket and I later realised, a box of special breakfast biscuits I had brought from home. Apparently she thought we had left so took my belongings- which seems amazing seem as my husbands large bag was very nearby on the floor and the wardrobes full. Thank goodness we had locked our valuables in the safe. Finally got jacket back which General Manager said was in ‘Lost and Found’. Really stressful and disappointing- ruined our stay.

Super clean room with a good supply of coffees, teas and biscuits. Only the basic toiletries in the bathroom but an ample amount of fresh, white towels. Our room (6) was next to the electricity source so the low level humming was an annoyance for my wife. We bought ear plugs, Super comfortable bed and lovely linens.

Food excellent , the only down side is how quiet the bar is upstairs (resulting in a sign saying this bar is unmanned). Other than that it was top notch.
