The Claridge Hotel opened in 1930 and was once nicknamed the “Skyscraper by the Sea.”
History buffs will be overwhelmed by the hotel’s rich past. John McShain, who also built the Pentagon and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, was the architect on the project. At the time of the Claridge Hotel's construction, it was the tallest hotel on the boardwalk. It was also the first hotel to have running hot and cold, fresh and salt, water.
The property re-opened in May of 2015 but the building’s charm and glamour still remains. The hotel has 500 guest rooms with 1920s-inspired decor and Jacuzzi tubs. The hotel’s fine dining establishment, the Twenties Restaurant, is the third oldest restaurant in Atlantic City with the original speakeasy bar. Diners can look out over the ocean while sampling the chef's Italian cuisine, steaks and seafood.
Although there is no casino in the hotel, the Claridge Hotel is the performance home for the Atlantic City Ballet, which was founded in 1982 and is considered one of the cultural treasures of New Jersey. The hotel is also home to the Holtzman Gallery at the Claridge, which features original artwork from more than 50 artists, including both local and international talent.
Those interested in spending time at the beach can walk two blocks to the boardwalk. Gamers can walk across the street to Bally’s Atlantic City for table games, casino slots, and twice-daily poker tournaments.
