With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and nearby South Downs countryside, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years. The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes and has a large collection of local cheeses. The Daily Telegraph praises its "largely homemade and absolutely delicious" food.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table said to be linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away, while Winchester Cathedral and the high street are five minutes' away.

We recommend a stroll alongside the River Itchen from the National Trust-owned Winchester City Mill to College Street, where you can see Winchester College and the house Jane Austen lived in for the last few months of her life.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

Had a slight problem on first afternoon, this was dealt with by duty manager who was outstanding in the way that he dealt with the problem and I and my friends could not thank him enough. A great couple of days.

Always stay in the same room as it's quiet. Maintains its standards so you know everything is going to be the same. Great location in the town centre.

As it is difficult to park nearby, it's really handy having on site parking front and back for £10 overnight.

Both of us had always wanted to visit Winchester so when we saw this offer it seemed like a great idea. Well it was! Went by train, (trying to save planet,) and it couldn't have been easier. Station an easy and interesting 10 minute walk to hotel, which is in a quiet side street moments from everything. Winchester Royal really very nice. Had a garden room which looked out on, well, a beautiful garden. Staff were lovely and took a pride in the hotel and Winchester. The meal we had in the hotel was good, a lovely roast, which is often a difficult meal to pull off. Menu had lots of interesting more modern choices but a roast on a Sunday in November was just too tempting. Had a great night's sleep on very comfortable bed, missed breakfast - both days - as bed was so comfortable, then sallied forth into Winchester and 5 minutes later we were standing admiring the fabulous cathedral. Did the lot, tour, evensong, oohed and aahed at all the beauty and history. bought the postcards. Well nearly everything. Went back the next day to see the new, stunning exhibition. I know this bit isn't really about the hotel, but in a way it is. All of it makes Winchester what it is. The hotel is steeped in history and with the ever helpful staff it just seems to flow into what we found in the city itself. Kindness, beauty and a real wish that visitors go away having experienced the best of what Winchester has to offer. Go, you won't be disappointed.

It is a bit tired looking inside, BUT the friendly and professional staff do make up for it, you cannot criticise them at all. A make over decoration-wise would make the hotel perfect. They are in an amazing location, you just cross the ring road into the main thoroughfare, and their garden is extraordinarily beautiful, they also have 2 car parks (at a charge unfortunately, but I can forgive that). The food is also very good. We had a Travelzoo deal, and it was a very good one. We had a perfect couple of days shopping.

We have visited the hotel in the past and will be visiting again in the future. That in itself is a recommendation as I am a retired hotel director
